Nick Henrie (Massena, N.Y./Massena) had a five-point college debut, but the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (0-1) fell on the road to Utica College (1-1) 14-11 on Monday afternoon. Junior attackman
Eric Soderquist (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) had two goals and two assists and senior captain
Matt Moran (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) registered a goal and three helpers.
The Bears raced out to a 7-3 over the first 25 minutes of the contest. Junior midfielder

Josh Huiatt (Lisbon, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) Henrie and Henrie scored in succession to give Potsdam a 3-0 lead at 4:57 of the first quarter. Henrie struck again at the 1:02 mark with an assist from Moran and the Bears had a 4-1 advantage after 15 minutes.
Soderquist scored at 12:26 of the second, but the Pioneers countered with two in a row, including a man-up goal from Ryan Desveaux at 8:19. Henrie scored the next two to put the Bears up 7-3 at 5:21, but Utica answered with a 7-0 run over the next 13:42.
Dominic Castiglia scored four times during the run to put the Pioneers up 10-7 with 5:52 to play in the third. Potsdam rallied with three straight to tie the game at 2:28. Moran set up senior attackman
Berkley Stone (Madison Conn./Daniel Hand) to start the run with a man-up goal at 3:54. Moran closed the gap to 10-9 39 seconds later and Soderquist finished a feed from Moran to tie the score 47 seconds after that. Desveaux completed his hat trick with 1:43 remaining in the third and Utica led 11-10 after 45 minutes.
Stone connected with Soderquist to tie the game again 51 seconds into the final period, but Potsdam couldn't solve Utica goalie Parker Smith again. The Pioneers scored the final three goals of the contest, getting two from Jake Bratek, to close out the 14-11 win.
In his first collegiate start, Bears sophomore goalie
Zach Sheridan (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) stopped 10 shots. Smith made 12 saves for the win.
Potsdam outshot Utica 45-37 and edged them in ground balls 33-32. In the faceoff circle, junior
Marc Leveroni (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) had a career day, winning 20 of his 28 attempts.
The Bears are back in action on Friday at 7 p.m. when they square off with the University of Scranton at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse.
