Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Golden Knights hold off Bears for 14-10 win

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (0-2) was unable to pull off another fourth quarter comeback against Clarkson University (5-1), falling 14-10 to the Golden Knights on Tuesday afternoon. Senior attackman Berkley Stone (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) had four goals to lead the Bears, while junior attackman Eric Soderquist (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) and freshman attackman Nick Henrie (Massena, N.Y./Massena) each added two tallies. Senior goalie Jack Bezek (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) made a career-high 22 saves. Ryan DaRin had a contest-best six goals for Clarkson.

Stone opened the scoring with a man-up goal at 13:28 of the first quarter with an assist from senior captain Matt Moran (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart). Ryan St. Croix evened the score about three minutes later, before Stone notched his second at 6:33. Soderquist made it a 3-1 contest with 2:38 to play and six saves from Bezek preserved the advantage after 15 minutes.

St. Croix and Ryan DaRin scored in succession to tie the game at 10:15 of the second quarter. After a quick faceoff win by junior Marc Leveroni (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake), sophomore long-stick middie Colby Chapman (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) scooped up the ground ball and went the distance for his first goal as a Bear. DaRin and Shane Kilday scored the next two to give the Golden Knights their first lead of the day with 5:50 left in the half. Henrie tied the game at 5-5 at 4:04, but Clarkson carried a 6-5 lead into the break thanks to a man-up goal from DaRin at 2:22. Bezek added another 10 stops to his total in the second quarter.

The Golden Knights outscored the Bears 5-2 in the third quarter. DaRin tacked on another man-up goal 39 seconds into the final half and St. Croix struck at 10:57 to make it 8-6. Stone slowed the momentum with his third of the game just over a minute later, but DaRin and Kyle Brown answered to give Clarkson a 10-6 lead at 7:01. Henrie netted his second two minutes after that, but Brown chipped in another man-up goal at 3:59 and the Golden Knights led 11-7 after 45 minutes.

St. Croix scored his fourth of the day to open up Clarkson's biggest lead at 12-7 with just under 10 minutes left. Potsdam freshman midfielder Josh Huiatt (Lisbon, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) buried his second career goal at 6:24, but DaRin again countered with his sixth of the day. Potsdam made a final push with two goals in 34 seconds from Soderquist and Stone to get within 13-10 at 3:39. Moran assisted on Stone's final marker. Clarkson called timeout after the goal. Leveroni won the next faceoff, but a chance to get the Bears within two was thwarted as Golden Knight goalie Nick Strandholm stopped a shot from junior midfielder Nick Orsini (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) with under three to go. Kilday closed the scoring at the 1:43 mark and Clarkson sealed the 14-10 victory.

Strandholm made eight saves for the Golden Knights.
