Oswego outlasts Potsdam in doubleheader

POTSDAM, N.Y.— Oswego State (6-11, 3-3 SUNYAC) swept the SUNY Potsdam softball team (3-16, 0-12 SUNYAC) 2-1 and 7-4 on Saturday afternoon in a SUNYAC doubleheader. Senior shortstop Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) went 3-for-7 with an RBI. Sophomore center fielder Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) went 2-for-4 with an RBI in game two and freshman first baseman Emma McCarthy (Stone Ridge, N.Y./Roundout Valley) went 2-for-3 with an RBI in game one.

Bears' freshman pitcher Megan Fish (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) and Lakers' freshman pitcher Rebecca Vilchez (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) started the game off in a duel. Through the first two innings, Fish and Vilchez struck out six, and gave up four hits combined.

With two outs in the top of the third, Oswego scored its first run on an error. Senior third baseman Ashley Lyman (Lockport, N.Y./Nichols School) followed with an RBI single to left field for a 2-0 lead.

The scored remained unchanged until the Bears' last at-bat. Bears' senior designated hitter Lauren Brace (Moriah, N.Y./Moriah Central) began the inning with a single up the middle. Two batters later, McCarthy singled to right center scoring sophomore pinch runner Cassie Cole (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton). Potsdam then sacrifice bunted McCarthy into scoring position, but could not bring her in, falling 2-1.

Fish (2-4) pitched a complete game struck out five and allowed two unearned runs. Vilchez (5-4) also pitched a complete game, struck out eight and allowed one earned run.

In the first inning of game two, Lyman singled to left field with a runner on first. Before the play ended, a fielding error occurred, allowing Vilchez to score and Lyman advance to third. During the next at-bat a wild pitch was thrown to bring in Lyman. Ott started the inning with a one out single. Following a steal and wild pitch, Ott was on third when Brace drove her in, cutting the lead to 2-1.

In the top of the third, Roe singled to left. Following a fly out by Lyman, junior first baseman Gabriella Vertuccio (Massaspequa, N.Y./Plainedge) doubled in Roe. The Bears started the bottom half of the inning with a Falsion bunt single and stolen base. Ott then knocked her in with a single through the right side to make it 3-2.

Junior third baseman Chelsea Streeter (Massena, N.Y./Massena) hit a double to give Bears a chance to tie the game in the fourth. A couple batters later, senior outfielder Kolbi Lyon (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) reached on error, and Streeter scored. Next. Falsion ripped a double to left field to plate Lyon, but was thrown out heading for third. However, the damage was done and Potsdam led 4-3 after four.

Oswego tied the game on an RBI single from Lyman in the top of the fifth.

In the final inning, Oswego had runners on second and third with two away when Lyman smashed a three-run home run. Potsdam was unable to rally in the bottom of the seventh as the Bears fell 7-4.
