POTSDAM, N.Y.—After falling in game one to Plattsburgh State (19-15, 9-5 SUNYAC) 8-0, the SUNY Potsdam softball team (6-19, 1-13) rallied for a 3-2 victory in game two. The win ends a 12-game losing streak against the Cardinals. Junior third baseman
Chelsea Streeter (Massena, N.Y./Massena) had the decisive two-run homer in the second game.
The Cardinals were powered by two long balls in game one. Plattsburgh took advantage of four hits and three errors in the top of the third to open up a 4-0 lead. Cardinals junior center fielder Dominique Zummo (Commack, N.Y./St. Anthony's) opened the scoring with an RBI single to center. After Plattsburgh took a 2-0 lead by way of a wild pitch, junior catcher Jackie Decker (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) drove in Zummo with a sacrifice fly. Freshman first baseman Haleigh Agans (Brasher Falls, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) capped the inning with a solo shot.
Sophomore Amy Glashoff (Montrose, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) made it a 5-0 game with an RBI single in the top of the fourth. She then scored on an error to make it 6-0.
In the top of the fifth, junior third baseman Kelsey Gage (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) closed the scoring with a two-run homer to left center.
Potsdam freshman
Megan Fish (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) (3-5) allowed seven runs, six earned, on seven hits, a walk and two strikeouts. Sophomore
Alissa McCauley (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) pitched the final inning, allowing a run on one hit, while striking out one Cardinal.
Plattsburgh freshman Rhea Pitkin (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) (7-7) allowed just two hits, three walks and struck out seven for her shutout.
Freshman left fielder
Lucy Condon (Kitchener, Ontario/St. David Catholic) was 2-for-2 two for the Bears.
Gage put the Cardinals up 1-0 in the top of the first of the finale with an RBI single that scored Zummo. Potsdam evened the score in the bottom of the third. After freshman second baseman
Sarah Hyland (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) singled to lead off the inning, senior shortstop
Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) knocked her in with a single up the middle.
Plattsburgh regained the lead in the top of the fourth with an RBI single to left field from sophomore shortstop Katilyn Preiss (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall). Potsdam countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Senior catcher
Lauren Brace (Moriah, N.Y./Moriah) reached on an error to open their half. Two batters later, Streeter connected to put the Bears up 3-2 for good.
Junior pitcher
Meghan Dougherty (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) worked out of a two out, bases loaded jam in the fifth. She then stranded a runner after a two-out double in the sixth. McCauley relieved her in the top of the seventh. She allowed a one out single before inducing a fly out to right and whiffing right fielder Felicia Torres (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) to end the contest.
Dougherty (2-7) allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits and three walks over six innings. McCauley notched her first save with a hit and a strike out in the seventh.
Junior Katie Pitkin (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) fell to 9-6 on the season after allowing three earned runs on six hits over five innings. She struck out five. Junior Taylor Smith (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) allowed one hit in her inning of work.
The victory was the Bears' first over the Cardinals since a 14-6 win at Plattsburgh on April 2, 2010.
Prior to the game, Alec Lyon, the 10-year old brother of Bears senior right fielder
Kolbi Lyon (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh), threw out the first pitch. Alec is a survivor of pediatric cancer. Potsdam wore and sold gold jerseys to raise awareness and funds for the fight against pediatric cancer.
Tomorrow afternoon, Potsdam looks to keep its momentum rolling with a home nonconference doubleheader against Johnson State. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
