Red Dragons spoil Bears comeback in OT, 16-15

ONEONTA, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (3-11, 0-7 SUNYAC) rallied from an eight-goal deficit before falling 16-15 in overtime at SUNY Oneonta (8-6, 4-3) on Wednesday afternoon. Senior captain Murphy Newman had a game-high seven points on six goals and an assist. The performance moves her into a tie with Molly Lehman-Lewis '10 for fourth on the program's all-time scoring list with 157 points (134g, 23a).
 
Senior captain Katie Lapinski (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) had five points on two goals and three assists to move into a tie for 10th on the scoring list with Mary English '01 with 99 points (57g, 42a). Sophomore midfielder Cayla O'Connor (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) had a career-high six points on four goals and two assists. Bears sophomore goalie Katie Longamore (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) matched her personal best with 15 saves.
 
The Red Dragons opened the contest with a 5-1 run over the first 12:43 that included two man-up goals and two goals from Kelsey Cohen. Senior midfielder Michael Cole (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) got Potsdam on the board with an assist from O'Connor at 25:46. Consecutive free-position goals from Newman and senior defender Alyssa Ferenczy (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) got the Bears within 5-3 at 14:51. Oneonta countered with a 6-0 run to build an 11-3 advantage at 3:39. The Red Dragons added another man-up goal and Taylor Casey scored twice. Potsdam'a offense finally got rolling in the final 2:44, scoring four in a row to close the gap to 11-7. Cole scored her second at 2:44 and O'Connor followed 29 seconds later with a helper from Lapinski. The duo connected again with the same result with 50 seconds left in the half. Newman buried her second of the day with another assist from O'Connor 0:21. However, Cohen scored two seconds before the break to give the Red Dragons a 12-8 lead at the half.
 
The Bears continued to surge in the second half. Lapinski scored a man-up goal with an assist from Newman at 26:53. Lapinski netted her second 2:30 later on a free position and Newman scored at 22:50 to make it 12-10. Oneonta scored three of the next four to grab a 15-11 lead with 17:12 play. O'Connor netted Potsdam's lone goal during the stretch with an assist from sophomore midfielder Meaghan Paige (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) at 18:27. The Bears struck for four straight to forge a 15-15 tie at the 4:32 mark. O'Connor started the run with a free-position goal at 13:47. Newman buried the next three in a row. She scored at 13:07, 10:36 and 4:32. Lapinski assisted on the second marker. After two saves from Red Dragons goalie Lexi Keen in the final minutes, Longamore stymied Jamie Morris with 14 seconds left and the teams headed into overtime.
 
Oneonta captured the opening draw control and 47 seconds later Casey thwarted the Bears' comeback hopes with her sixth goal of the game.
 
Red Dragons goalie Jacklyn Marry made three saves and allowed seven goals in the first half. Keen earned the win after stopping seven shots and allowing eight goals in the second half and overtime.
 
The Bears will now wrap up their season at Geneseo at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
