POTSDAM, N.Y.—Buffalo State (5-5, 1-1 SUNYAC) scored with 18 seconds remaining to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (2-7. 0-3) 8-7 on Saturday afternoon. Bears senior captain
Murphy Newman (Canton, N.Y./Berkshire School) had a game-high five points on four goals and an assist to reach 140 points for her career. Sophomore goalie
Katie Longamore (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) made 10 saves for Potsdam.
Newman put the Bears up 2-0 at 22:58 of the first half with consecutive free-position tallies. Buffalo state slowly put together a 6-0 run over the last 20:27 of the half. Bengals junior attack Alanna Herne (Tonawanda, N.Y./Tonawanda) had two goals and two assists during the stretch and sophomore midfielder Jackie Dufresne (Lake View, N.Y./Frontier) and senior midfielder Christina Standinger (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) each scored twice. Herne struck with 1.4 seconds left in the period and Buffalo State led 6-2 at the break.
The Bears battled back in the second half. Newman singlehandedly closed the gap to 6-4 with goals at 27:43 and 25:10. She then set up fellow senior captain
Katie Lapinski (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) for a highlight reel marker at 19:02. After cutting to the net and earning a free-position attempt, senior attack
Mariah Pierce (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) tied the game at 6-6 with 15:11 to play. The Bengals pulled back in front with a goal from sophomore attack Morgan Hogue (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning) at 4:18. Potsdam tied the game one final time at 3:12 as sophomore midfielders
Cayla O'Connor (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) and Meagan Paige (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) connected for Paige's third goal of the season. With just over a minute to play, Lapinski had a shot blocked and Buffalo State cleared the zone. Hogue fed Dufresne in front for the game-winner with 18 seconds left. Bears senior midfielder
Michaela Cole (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) seized the ensuing draw control, but with time running out, had to force the ball of up field and the Bengals came up with it.
Buffalo State junior goalie Elyse Stark (Lido Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) allowed just two goals and made six saves in the first 30 minutes. She was replaced by classmate Megan Doyle (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra Macedon) in the second half. Doyle made two saves and allowed five goals for her third win of the season.
Potsdam outshot the Bengals 24-23, but Buffalo State finished with a 22-19 advantage in ground balls.
