Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Boulio’s OT goal gives Bears third straight victory

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Senior captain Casey Boulio (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) scored with one minute left in overtime to lift the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (4-4) to a 10-9 victory at Castleton University (6-6) on Sunday afternoon. The win was the Bears' third in a row, second overtime triumph in as many days and gets Potsdam back to .500.

Senior captain Matt Moran (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) had a hat trick and an assist, while junior attackman Eric Soderquist (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) scored two goals and registered two assists. Junior midfielder Nick Orsini (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and senior attackman Berkley Stone (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) each totaled a goal and two assists. Senior Jack Bezek (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) continued to shine in goal with 19 saves on the afternoon.

Potsdam built a 3-0 lead on over the first 12 minutes of the contest. Moran opened the scoring just 48 seconds into the game with an assist from Orsini. Freshman midfielder Josh Huiatt (Lisbon, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) made it 2-0 just over two minutes later and Soderquist set up Stone at 3:07. The Spartans got goals from Sam Siegel and Colin Clark in the final 2:45 to close the gap to 3-2 after 15 minutes.

Soderquist and Orsini scored the only goals of the second quarter for a 5-2 lead at the half. Stone assisted on Soderquist's tally at 14:20 and Soderquist fed Orsini at 8:03.

Castleton battled back in the second half. Spartan Kyle Lutinski made it 5-3 at 13:29 of the third quarter, but Moran and Soderquist answered with two in a row on assists from Stone and Moran, respectively. Castleton's Louis Alhage and Kevin McCarthy made it a 7-5 contest at 6:13 of the third quarter. The score was unchanged heading into the last 15 minutes.

Freshman attackman Nick Henrie (Massena, N.Y./Massena) extended the Bears' lead to 8-5 at 11:07 of the fourth with Orsini's second helper of the day. After the Spartans got to within 8-6 on a goal from Tom Pardew, Moran struck again to return Potsdam's lead to three. However, Castleton had a final charge to push the game to overtime. McCarthy scored at 6:51, followed by a man-up goal from Jason Sedell at 2:24. Sedell then tied the game with just 1:09 on the clock.

After a Potsdam turnover, Bezek stopped Castleton's only chance of the extra session with 1:41 to go. The Bears then cleared the zone and Sedell was whistled for a push. Just 29 seconds later, Boulio connected with Henrie for the decisive score on the man advantage.

Brandon Myron made just four saves between the pipes for the Spartans.

The Bears return to SUNYAC play on Wednesday night when they host Oswego State for a critical game at 7 p.m.
