Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Johnston and Mullery score twice as Bears thump Spartans, 4-1

CASTLETON, VT.—Senior defender Spencer Johnston (Valatie, N.Y./Hudson Valley C.C.) and junior defender Tyler Mullery (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) each scored twice as the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (4-1) defeated Castleton University (1-4) 4-1 on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore goalie Jakeb Mitchell (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) made two saves to earn his 8th career victory.

The teams battled through a scoreless first half. The Spartans outshot the Bears 8-5, but Potsdam sophomore goalie Jakeb Mitchell (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) handled both shots that came his way. Aaron Parker made three saves.

The Bears ambushed the Spartans in the second half. Just 20 seconds in, Mullery finished a feed from junior midfielder Jorge Ferrer (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) for a 1-0 lead and his first career goal. 3:10 later, Mullery notched his second to double the advantage. At 58:58, Castleton finally answered on a goal from Colby Gay to close the gap to 2-1. Potsdam countered exactly one minute later as Johnston buried his first career marker with a helper from junior midfielder Djavan Guy (New York, N.Y./St. John's Prep). In the 71st minute, Johnston struck again to put the nail in the coffin.

Senior goalie Keagen Briggs (Peru, N.Y./Seton Catholic) relieved Mitchell and didn't face a shot in the last 7:08. Parker allowed all four goals and made five saves in the first 79:34 for Castleton. Alex Fernald didn't face a shot in the final 10:26.

The Bears finished with a 15-9 advantage in shots and a 4-2 edge in corners.

Potsdam is back in action on Thursday when the Bears host Hobart College at 7 p.m. under the lights.
