POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Cortland (9-1, 3-0 SUNYAC) scored a goal in each half to defeat the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (4-5, 0-2) 2-0 on Friday afternoon. Senior goalie
Keagen Briggs (Peru, N.Y./Seton Catholic) made eight stops for the Bears.
After even play in the opening minutes, the Red Dragons were able to create and sustain pressure on the Bears defense. Cortland earned a corner kick in the 23rd minute. At the 22:47 mark, after a scramble in front of the net, Potsdam attempted to clear the zone. However, freshman midfielder Michael Lanzetta (Hartsdale, N.Y./Somers) knocked the ball down and drove it off the hands of a diving Briggs and into the top left corner of the net. The Red Dragons didn't slow up, but the Bears kept them off the board again for the remainder of the half.
The Bears battled evenly with Cortland in the final 45 minutes, but the Red Dragons were still able to extend their lead. At 63:07, sophomore defender Janik Juelch (Meerbusch, N.Y./Deutsche Sporthochschule Koln) brought the ball in from the right side. Briggs charged out and jumped anticipating a high shot, but Juelch kept the ball on the ground to make it 2-0. Sophomore forward
Brandon Igiehon (Dublin, Ireland/Channel View School) nearly got Potsdam on the borad with 11 minutes left, but Cortland senior goalie Connor Young (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) made the save to seal the shutout.
Young finished with two saves.
The Bears look to bounce back when they host Oswego State at 1 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
