Big second half lifts Oswego over Potsdam

OSWEGO, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (1-12, 0-7 SUNYAC) built a first have lead, but Oswego State (5-9, 2-5) rallied in the second for a 58-44 win. Sophomore guard Drew Dufrane (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) led the Bears with nine points and junior guard Mikayla Horton (Hammond, N.Y./Hammond) scored seven. Junior guard Riley Luckie (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) and freshman forward Hannah Marcellus (Potsdam, N.Y./Madrid-Waddington) each had six.
 
The Lakers jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but it would be their only lead of the half as the Bears responded with a 13-4 run in the opening quarter. Potsdam scored 10 straight points to take a 10-4 advantage. Each of the Bears starters had one basket during the period. Dufrane, Horton and Riley Luckie each hit threes, while freshmen Nicole Hansen (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) and Marcellus had the other four points.
 
Oswego outscored the Bears 10-8 in the second quarter, but couldn't get even. Sophomore guard Leah Giavatto (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) started Potsdam's offense off with a layup. Luckie drilled another three and freshman center Naya Walters (Bronx, N.Y./Women's Academy of Excellence) provided a free throw and a layup. The Bears led 21-18 at the break.
 
The Lakers finally heated up in the third quarter, opening with a 19-4 run. The Bears closed the period with an 8-2 stretch and trailed 39-29 after 30 minutes. Marcellus accounted for four points, while Giavatto and junior guard Abbey Smith (Bainbridge, N.Y./Bainbridge-Guilford) each had a basket.
 
Potsdam put up 15 points in the final quarter, but couldn't make up ground as Oswego finished out the 58-44 victory. Dufrane hit two threes and Walters and Horton each scored four more. Freshman guard Carly Shear (Newark, N.Y./Newark) also had bucket in the fourth.
 
Rachael Windhausen recorded a double-double for the Lakers with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Quincey Zimmerman and Courtney Ameele each scored 14 as well. Zana Dillard finished with seven points and 12 boards.
 
The Bears are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. when they travel to Cortland to take on the Red Dragons.
