POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (2-0) honored Olympic bronze medalist and hall of famer alum Chris Lee '04 prior to its 7-3 thumping of Saint Michael's College (0-2) on Friday night. Seven different Bears scored and senior assistant captain
Nate Skidmore (Syracuase, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) made 28 saves for the win. Junior assistant captain
Vincent Guimond (Sorel-Tracy, Quebec/Gloucester Rangers) and freshman forward
Devin Panzeca (Lake Zurich, Ill./East Coast Wizards) each had a goal and two assists and junior forward
Tyler Young (Massena, N.Y./Kanata Lasers) recorded four assists.
Potsdam took advantage of its very first power play of the game. At 15:26, sophomore forward
Brett Horn (Cary, N.C./Humboldt) scored on the man advantage with helpers from Guimond and junior forward
Bryce Ferrell (Buffalo, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) for a 1-0 lead. Despite a 10-8 edge in shots, the Purple Knights were down one heading into the first intermission.
The teams combined for six goals in a wild second period. Despite being down a man, freshman forward
Tom Terranova (Middletown, N.J./Syracuse Stars) capitalized on a turnover and gave the Bears a 2-0 advantage at 4:28 with his first career goal. Just over four minutes later, senior defenseman Jack Ouelette (Arlington, Mass./Dexter School) scored to halve the deficit. Potsdam regained its two-goal lead at 11:18 as senior defenseman
Dom Horvath (Toledo, Ohio./Brantford 99ers) beat junior goalie Tim Decker (Liverpool, N.Y./Canterbury School) with a high shot from the right point. Young assisted on the goal. Saint Mike's answered just 22 seconds later on a goal from senior forward Patrick Doherty (Tewksbury, Mass./Middlesex Black Bears). At 15:19, Panzeca notched his first goal as a Bear and the eventual game-winner on the power play with assists from Guimond and Young. With just under two minutes left in the period, Guimond scored in the slot after a feed from Panzeca and senior defenseman
Trevor Dennis (Rochester, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres). Potsdam held a 5-2 lead after 40 minutes.
The Bears put the game out of reach in the first four minutes of the third period. Sophomore defenseman
Jon Venter (Guilford, Conn./Syracuse Stars) made it 6-2 on a shot from the blue line at 2:40 on the power play. Panzeca and Young recorded the assists. Just 1:10 later, junior defenseman
Sean Winikates (Phoenix, Ariz./Philadelphia Jr. Flyers) finished an odd man rush by ripping a perfect pass from junior forward
Anthony Merante (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Thorold Blackhawks) past Decker. Young claimed the second assist on the play. The goal ended Decker's evening and he was replaced by freshman goaltender Hugo Turcotte (Gap, France/Kimball Union Academy). Saint Mike's netted one final goal as sophomore forward Zach Sullivan (Weymouth, Mass./Walpole Express) scored a power-play marker with 7:46 remaining.
Decker allowed seven goals and made 19 saves in 43:50. Turcotte stopped 10 shots in the last 16:10.
The Bears outshot the Purple Knights 36-31 on the night. Potsdam finished 3-for-4 on the power play and Saint Michael's was 1-for-3. The Bears are now 12-0-1 in the all-time series with the Purple Knights dating back to a 6-4 win in Maxcy on Nov. 2, 1984.
The Bears are back in action on Tuesday night when they host Elmira College at 7 p.m.
