Box Score POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (2-1) rallied from a 2-0 deficit before falling to Elmira College (1-2) 3-2 on Tuesday evening. Senior captain
Mike Sweeney (Pittsburgh, Pa./PAL Islanders) and sophomore defenseman
Joseph Richardson (Palm Beach, Fla./PAL Islanders) each scored for the Bears and freshman goaltender
Ryan Glander (Campbell Hall, N.Y./Rochester Jr. Monarchs) made 18 saves in his collegiate debut.
After killing off a 1:24 five-on-three power play midway through the first period, the Soaring Eagles got on the board at 12:47. Sophomore defenseman Ryan Blais (Woonsocket, R.I./South Shore Kings) scored from the right point for a 1-0 lead. Just 2:06 later, Blais struck again on the man advantage, burying a shot from the left faceoff circle that Glander never saw. Elmira led 2-0 after one.
Potsdam dominated the second period thanks to some more Soaring Eagle penalty trouble. The Bears went up two men 7:15 into the period and were able to generate intense pressure. Finally at 8:33, Sweeney ripped a pass from junior forward
Nate Zweig (Binghamton, N.Y./Syracuse Stars) over the shoulder of Elmira sophomore goalie Gennaro Anzevino (South Hackensack, N.J./Dells Ducks) from the left faceoff circle. Junior forward
Tyler Young (Massena, N.Y./Kanata Lasers) notched the second assist on the power-play marker. The Bears outshot the Eagles 16-8 in the middle stanza and were even at 2-2 after 40 minutes.
Elmira got its game-winner at 13:51 of the third period. Junior forward Connor Powell (Merrimack, N.H./New Hamshire Monarchs) tipped home a pass from fellow junior forward Matthew Cuce (Fort Myers, Fla./Springfield Pics) in the slot. The remainder of the game was filled with 34 minutes of matching penalties. Glander was pulled with 1:27 to go and with the extra attacker, Potsdam nearly evened the score. However, the Bears finally ran out of time.
Anzevino was a decisive factor in the contest, stopping 38 shots. Potsdam outshot Elmira 40-21 and was 1-for-5 on the power play. The Soaring Eagles were 1-for-4.
The Bears are back in action this Friday at 7 p.m. when they head down Route 11 to face the SUNY Canton Kangaroos.
