Cardinals hold off Bears, 5-3

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Plattsburgh Cardinals (13-11-0, 9-8-0) held off the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (7-15-2, 4-11-2) 5-3 on Friday evening at Maxcy Ice Arena. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Plattsburgh opened the scoring, with senior forward Jake Sacratini (Montreal, Quebec/AIC) scoring on the power play, assisted by senior forward Colin Callanan (Stony Point, N.Y./New York Apple Core) and senior defenseman Spencer Bellina (Medina, Ohio/Chippewa Steel). 
  • Sophomore forward Patrick Cole (Lancaster, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabers) doubled the Cardinals' lead with five minutes to go in the period. Senior defenseman Lonan Bulger (Yellowknife, Northwest Territories/Hobart)  and sophomore forward Shane Bondy (Sharon, Ontario/Markham Royals) had the assists. 
  • The Bears responded with two goals in less than two minutes.
  • Sophomore forward Garret McCabe (London, Ontario/Brantford 99ers) had the first Potsdam goal of the contest, with assists from sophomore defenseman Lucas Salas (Hazlet, N.J./New Jersey 87's) and senior defenseman Michael Campbell (Etobicoke, Ontario/Jersey Whalers). 
  • Sophomore forward Owen Watson (Smiths Falls, Ontario/Smiths Falls Bears) tied the game 2-2. Senior forwards Ryan Mahlmesiter (Massapequa, N.Y./PAL Islanders) and Mathieu Parent (Kapuskasing, Ontario/Renfrew Wolves) picked up the assists. 
  • Freshman Plattsburgh forward Gabriel Filion (Montreal, Quebec/Drayton Valley Thunder) netted the only goal of the second period, assisted by sophomore forward Quinn Tavares (Mississauga, Ontario/Salve Regina University) and Bellina. 
  • The Cardinals added two more goals in the second half of the final period, making it 5-2 with less than eight minutes left in the contest. 
  • Freshman forward Felix-Antoine Parenteau (St-Augustine-de-Desmaures, Quebec/Kents Hill School) had the fourth Plattsburgh goal. Senior forward Riley Sutherland (Burlington, Ontario/St. Michael's Buzzers) and Callanan had the assists. 
  • Cole made it five, with assists from sophomore forward Blake Hall (Fort Erie, Ontario/Fort Erie Meteors) and freshman defenseman Mike English (Hague, N.Y./P.A.L Jr. Islanders). 
  • Junior Bears' forward Jakub Hall (Anchorage, Alaska/Richmond Generals) scored the third and final goal for Potsdam late in the third period, unassisted.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • Plattsburgh outshot Potsdam 36-25. 
  • The Bears were 0-for-3 on the power play. The Cardinals were 1-for-3. 
  • Potsdam blocked 20 shots, and Plattsburgh blocked 10. 
  • Junior Bears' goaltender Lenny Perno (Rochester, N.Y./Richmond Generals) stopped 31 shots in the contest. 
  • Freshman Cardinals' goalie Brady Spry (Belleville, Ontario/Trenton Golden Hawks) made 22 saves.
