SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (13-17) defeated Lasell College (13-18) and Union College on the final day of the Skidmore Invitational.
In the first set against the Lasers, the Bears did not trail once before taking the first set 25-12. Lasell was able to avoid the sweep with a 25-17 second set win. Potsdam then rolled to a 25-13 set three win and shut the Lasers down with a 25-15 win in the fourth to close out the victory. Sophomore outside hitter
Nicole Hansen (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) led the Bears with 14 kills and three aces. Sophomore middle hitter
Monica Mack (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) was right behind Hansen with 10 kills and two aces. Junior outside hitter
Xanara Ruiz (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) recorded six kills and seven digs, while junior libero
Natalie Magallon (Commerce, Calif./Bell Gardens) led Potsdam with 30 digs. Senior setter
Brianna Rodda (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) had the team-high 33 assists along with a pair of aces.
In a nail-biter, the Bears took set one over the Dutchwomen 32-30. Potsdam then took the second set 25-15, before Union won their first set 25-15. The Dutchwomen prevailed in a 27-25 fourth set victory, causing a fifth set. The Bears won the fifth set 15-12, and the match 3-2. Hansen led Potsdam with 23 kills and recorded four aces. Ruiz had season-highs with 14 kills and 17 digs, while Mack had nine kills with two block assists. Rodda had 49 assists, 16 digs and four aces, and Magallon had 21 digs
The Bears will be back in action Tuesday when they travel to Fredonia for the first round of SUNYAC playoffs.
