Bears hammer Hawks in opener

BUFFALO, N.Y.-- The SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (1-0) came out quick scoring seven goals in the first half, en route to an 8-0 victory against Hilbert College (0-1) in the first round of the Spartan Classic on Friday afternoon. Senior midfielder Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) scored two goals and an assist, while freshman midfielder Kristina Sanchez (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) also scored two goals.

At 5:00, senior forward Amber Hyatt (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-Dewitt) kicked things off with a goal off the pass of Falsion. A few minutes later, senior midfielder Rylie Murray (Berkley, Mich./Berkley) took a corner kick and set up Falsion for the second goal of the game. The Hawks were able to stop the Bears momentarily until Falsion scored her second goal of the game at 20:36. Two minutes later Sanchez netted her first goal of her collegiate career, increasing the lead to four. At 24:41, senior forward Olivia Seamans (Bolton Landing, N.Y./Bolton) passed it to sophomore forward Lexi Dean (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) who scored and extending the lead to five. Five minutes later, freshman forward Mackenzie Bowie (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville) scored her first collegiate goal, and gave Potsdam a 6-0 lead. The Bears scored their final goal of the half off the foot of Sanchez, her second of the game.

The second half was more competitive as neither team scored for most of it. At 84:02, Potsdam got one more on the board, off the foot of freshman midfielder Makenna Crosson (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora). Crosson was the third Bear to score her first collegiate goal during the 8-0 victory against Hilbert.

Brianna Stegmeier made eight saves for the Hawks, while sophomore goalie Gabby Hobika (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford) went untested during the game.

The Bears return to action tomorrow in Buffalo when they take on D'Youville at 12 p.m. looking for the tournament title.
