Bears handle Beavers, Panthers on Day 1 of Old Westbury Invite

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (2-0) defeated the City College of New York (0-2) and SUNY Old Westbury (1-1) on the first day of competition at the Old Westbury Labor Day Invitational.
 
The Bears rolled over the Beavers in the opening match 3-0. In set one, the Bears shook off an early deficit and closed the contest on a 13-2 run for a 25-15 victory. Potsdam trailed set two 3-0 before finishing the stanza on a 25-7 stretch for a 25-10 win. The Bears started quickly out of the gate and never slowed down for a 25-14 decision to close out CCNY in set three.
 
Sophomore outside hitter Gabby Scott (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) led the Bears' offense with a match-high eight kills, while also contributing six digs and a block.  Sophomore middle hitter Monica Mack (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) notched seven kills and put together a dominating serving performance with nine aces. In her Potsdam debut, freshman outside hitter Emme Price (Glendale, Ariz./Deer Valley) also totaled seven kills. Senior setter Brianna Rodda (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) added a contest-best 22 assists along with five digs. Freshman setter Alyssa Rogers (Anchorage, Alaska/Grace Christian) chipped in eight digs and a block in her first collegiate action.
 
Against the host Panthers in the nightcap, the Bears held off a tough challenge in set one before earning a 26-24 win. The Bears then rolled to 25-14 and 25-18 victories in the final two sets.  Scott, Mack and sophomore outside hitter Nicole Hansen (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) each recorded 10 kills in the contest, while Mack and Scott also added three aces each. Rodda continued to push for an all-tourney team selection with a team and game-high 28 assists and 10 digs. Junior libero Natalie Magallon (Commerce, Calif./Bell Gardens) topped the Bears with 11 digs and added three aces and three assists.
 
Potsdam wraps up play at Old Westbury tomorrow at 2 p.m. when the Bears square off with William Paterson.
