Bears split at SLU, Rodda reaches 3,000 assists

CANTON, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (6-10) fell to host St. Lawrence University (11-5) 3-0 before rebounding for a 3-0 win over Cazenovia College (2-11) on day one of the Canton Classic. Senior setter Brianna Rodda (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) became the first Bear to reach 3,000 assists in the match with the Saints.
 
St. Lawrence edged Potsdam 25-23, 25-17 and 25-23 in the opener. Sophomore outside hitter Gabby Scott (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) had an all around strong match with game-highs in kills (10) and digs (16) to go with a block and an assist. Fellow sophomore outside hitter Nicole Hansen (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) registered seven kills and an ace. Sophomore middle hitter Monica Mack (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) totaled four kills and two blocks. Junior libero Natalie Magallon (Commerce, Calif./Bell Gardens) posted 15 digs and Rodda finished with 23 assists and one ace. Senior defensive specialist Maddie Kaplan (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) had eight digs.
 
The Bears tore through the Wildcats 25-9, 25-21, 25-8 in the second match. Hanson led Potsdam with 10 kills, five aces and nine digs. Scott recorded four kills and seven digs and senior outside hitter Rachel Pridell (Lowville, N.Y./Lowville) added four kills. Rodda contributed 21 more assists and Magallon had 13 digs and an assist. Freshman middle hitter Emme Price (Glendale, Ariz./Deer Valley) chipped in three aces and junior outside hitter Xanara Ruiz (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) had one block.
 
The Bears close out the weekend with a 4:30 p.m. match tomorrow afternoon at SUNY Canton.
