Bears pick up another SUNYAC road win at Oswego, 59-52

OSWEGO, N.Y — The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (6-9, 3-6 SUNYAC) picked up another SUNYAC road win on Tuesday night after defeating Oswego State (2-14, 1-8) 59-52. Potsdam led for all but one minute of the game. Freshman guard Dyamon Hunter (Bronx, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall Academy) led the Bears with 16 points, to go along with four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Hunter scored eight of her 16 points in the fourth quarter and got the steal in the closing seconds to help the Bears come away with the victory. Freshman forward Devyn Elliott (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) added 14 points, four rebounds and four assists.

The Bears smothering defense in the interior during first quarter allowed them to control the tempo, holding the Lakers to 3-of-12 shooting. Potsdam led 12-10 after 10 minutes

Both teams struggled to begin the second quarter, until Potsdam went on an 11-3 run. Hunter, who had six points during the run, opened up the scoring with a transition layup and capped it with a shot inside while absorbing contact. The Lakers, down 10, got back into the game with a 3-pointer from Logan Castiglione near the left wing, followed by a layup by Ramatoulaye SY. Potsdam then responded when Elliott hit a midrange jumper and senior guard Abbey Smith (Bainbridge, N.Y./Bainbridge-Guilford) scored inside off a bounce pass from Elliot. The Bears led 27-20 at the half.

Both teams shot well coming into the third quarter. Raiven Encarnacion hit the first two 3-pointers early and brought the Lakers to within 29-26. Carly Shear responded with two 3-pointers of her own for Potsdam shortly after. Oswego's outside shooting and ability to get to the line allowed them to grab their first lead at the 2:01 mark at 38-37. Potsdam quickly regained the lead after a pair of free throws and Hunter's steal and transition layup. The Bears were up 41-39 after three quarters.

The Bears opened up the fourth with a 10-0 run that was ignited by Elliot's midrange jumper. Hunter capped off the run by driving inside, getting her defender in the air and finishing through the contact for the and-one. Elliott's completion of the and-one at the line put Potsdam up 12, its largest lead of the game. The Lakers got within six after Windhausen's shot inside and Quincey Zimmerman's three. Both teams struggled to score after the shot. Hunter scored for the Bears at the 3:11 mark with a layup, and Oswego finally ended their dry spell after Zimmerman drilled another 3-pointer from the left wing. Free throws from the Bears put them up nine and with time against the Lakers, SY hit a three from the top of the key to cut it back to six with under 30 seconds remaining. After SY hit another jumper for the Lakers, Hunter hit two clutch free throws and came up with a steal in the last 10 seconds to secure the 59-52 win.

SY led the Lakers with 18 points, to go along with 11 rebounds and three steals. Zimmerman posted 11 points.

Potsdam shot 41 percent from the field, while Oswego shot 30 percent.

The Bears are back home on Friday as they host SUNY Geneseo in the Jerry Welsh Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m.
