POTSDAM, N.Y.--- The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (6-9, 3-6 SUNYAC) fell to the conference leading SUNY Geneseo (15-1, 8-1 SUNYAC) 72-48 on Friday afternoon. Potsdam had a strong first half and was able to take a double-digit lead in the second quarter. Geneseo came out of halftime and outscored the Bears 27-4 in the third and built a 28-point lead in the fourth. Freshman forward
Devyn Elliott (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) had 17 points and added 10 rebounds to lead Potsdam. Sophomore center
Naya Walters (Bronx, N.Y./Women's Academy of Excellence) added added 10 points and eight rebounds. Mckenna Brooks led the Knights with a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds.
With the first quarter being evenly matched, both teams looked to make a run in the second. Potsdam had a strong start to the second quarter. The Bears started off by drawing a charge on the defensive end at 9:17, followed by scoring seven unanswered points, which forced a Geneseo timeout. They continued their good play coming out of the timeout. Elliott, hit a mid range jump shot coming off a screen, and followed it up with an offensive putback and the foul. Senior guard
Riley Luckie (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg) gave Potsdam the first double-digit lead of the game at the 3:34 mark with a three a from the left wing. Geneseo kept themselves in the game with an 8-2 run to close the quarter with three-pointers from Allyssa Lesakowski and Natalie DiSalvo. Potsdam held a 29-25 lead at the conclusion of the first half.
Kelsey Poplawski opened up the scoring on the first play of the second half when she found herself wide open for a three-pointer from the right corner. Natalie Alferi then finished inside around two defenders which gave Geneseo a 32-31 lead, their first of the evening. Brooks then left her mark with two offensive putbacks and Poplawski finished inside. The 15-2 run by Geneseo forced a Bears timeout midway through the third. The Knights didn't keep their foot off the pedal coming out of the timeout, scoring twelve more unanswered points and Nicole Kaczmarczyk's layup gave them their largest lead of the game at 21.
The Knights extended their lead in the fourth quarter, with 28 being the largest after the steal and fastbreak layup by Sara Clotti at the 4:06 mark. The Knights went on to win 72-48.
Geneseo shot 49% from the field, while Potsdam shot 38%.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow as they host SUNY Plattsburgh tomorrow at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium at 5:30.
