Golden Eagles escape Bears, 72-66

POTSDAM, N.Y.--- The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (6-11, 3-8 SUNYAC) fell to SUNY Brockport (7-9, 5-4 SUNYAC) 72-66 on Saturday afternoon. Throughout the tight contest, both teams exchanged leads for the majority of the game. The Golden Eagles eventually took the lead in the fourth quarter and never relinquished it.  Freshman forward Devyn Elliott (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) led the Bears with 27 points and six rebounds. Freshman guard Dymon Hunter (Bronx, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall) finished with 17 points and eight assists.

After Elliott scored the first basket for the Bears, the Golden Eagles started an 8-2 run led by sophomore guard Julianna Taylor (Fonda, N.Y./Fonda-Fultonville) who scored six points with a midrange jumper and two shots inside. Both teams struggled from outside in the first but they found success inside in the majority of their baskets. Potsdam led 18-14 after one quarter of play.

Brockport was disruptive on the defensive end to open the second quarter, with their first four points coming off of turnovers. The two teams traded baskets and leads throughout the quarter and frequently got to the free throw line. After relinquishing their early second quarter lead, the Golden Eagles regained it with two free throws by senior forward Emily Nestler (Henrietta, N.Y./Rush Henrietta) with 3:58 left in the second. Brockport closed the half with a half court heave by sophomore guard Zaria McCullough (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South). Elliott scored 10 points in the second quarter with her offensive rebounds and put backs. Her 10 second quarter points gave her 15 total at halftime. The Golden Knights led 36-34 after twenty minutes of play.

Potsdam retook the lead midway through the third quarter after a deep three from senior guard Riley Luckie (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg) at the left wing. It was followed up by Hunter splitting through the defense and driving to the basket for a layup, putting the Bears up four. The basket forced a Brockport timeout with 4:56 remaining. Potsdam took their largest lead of the quarter at seven after Hunter finished through contact inside and completed a three-point play. The Golden Eagles went on to score a quick five unanswered points to close the quarter with a jumper from Taylor, a layup by freshman forward Allison Chiera (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane High School), and a free throw from Nestler. The Bears led by two going into the final quarter.

Freshman guard Chelsea Henry's (Greece, N.Y./Greece Athena) floater midway through the fourth quarter put the Golden Eagles back in front 54-53. Elliott and Chiera both then scored baskets for their respective teams and the Bears called a timeout. Coming out of the timeout freshman forward Kylee Rosbrook (Watertown, N.Y./General Brown) hit a three from the top of the key for Brockport. Rosbrook's free throw with three minutes remaining put Brockport up six. Following the free throw, Potsdam was able to keep themselves in the game with a layup through contact by Elliott then free throws by sophomore center Naya Walters (Bronx, N.Y./Women's Academy of Excellence). Nestler kept the Golden Eagles ahead after finishing inside around two defenders. After free throws from the Eagles, Hunter banked a three-pointer off the glass to bring Potsdam to within three with 30 seconds remaining. Fouled intentionally, Brockport made the free throws to make it a two possession game and secured the 72-66 win.

Nestler finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds in the win. McCullough had 16 points, four rebounds, and five assists. .
