GENEVA, N.Y.—No. 14/15 Hobart College (11-4) scored three first period goals and held on to defeat the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (6-9) 5-3 on Friday afternoon. Junior assistant captain Vincent Guimond, junior forward Bryce Ferrell (Buffalo, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and junior forward Tyler Young (Massena, N.Y./Kanata Lasers) each scored for the Bears and senior assistant captain Nate Skidmore (Syracuse, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) made a career-high 50 saves.
 
The Statesmen struck first at 6:18 of the first period as Zach Tyson cut to the right side of the net and beat Skidmore with a high shot glove side. The teams combined for seven penalties and five power plays in the opening 20 minutes and Hobart took advantage. Tanner Shaw scored a power-play marker from the left side of the net at 15:02. At 17:57, Julien Denicourt scored goal on the man advantage with a shot from the left point. The Statesmen outshot Potsdam 16-12 in the period and took the three-goal lead into the first intermission.
 
On the brink with just under half the contest to go, the Bears rallied. Guimond scored an unassisted goal at 11:27 to get Potsdam on the board. At 15:58, Ferrell closed the gap to one with a power-play goal. Sophomore forward Brett Horn (Cary, N.C./Humboldt Broncos) picked up the assist. The Bears continued to build momentum and at 18:28, Young got Potsdam even with helpers from Horn and sophomore defenseman Jon Venter (Guilford, Conn./Syracuse Stars). Skidmore's 29 saves in the second period alone, had the Bears knotted at 3-3 after 40 minutes.
 
Potsdam outshot the Statesmen 14-11 in the third period, but couldn't solve Hobart goalie Joe Halstrom for the go ahead goal. With 4:49 to play, Pierre-Anthony Martineau broke free for a shorthanded goal and the eventual game-winner. With 1:02 remaining, Potsdam pulled Skidmore for an extra attacker. However, Martineau struck again with 47 seconds on the clock to seal the win with an empty-netter.
 
Halstrom earned the victory with 29 saves. Hobart was 2-for-9 on the power play and the Bears finished 1-for-5.
 
Potsdam is back in action when the Bears host SUNY Canton on Saturday at 7 p.m. Potsdam downed the Roos in overtime 3-2 in Canton on Nov. 2.
