OSWEGO, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (6-8, 2-4 SUNYAC) got a critical 2-0 SUNYAC victory at Oswego State (2-12, 0-5) on Friday afternoon. Junior forward
Lexi Dean (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) and sophomore forward
Mackenzie Bowie (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville) each scored for the Bears, while junior goalkeeper
Gabby Hobika (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford) made seven saves for her 12th career win and sixth career shutout.
After starting out even, the Bears exerted their will on the Lakers as the first half progressed. Despite finishing the half with a 5-2 corner kick deficit, Potsdam outshot Oswego 11-6. At the 27:32 mark, Dean open the scoring with a shot into the low right corner of the goal. Just 3:20 later, Bowie doubled the advantage with a high shot. The score was unchanged at the break.
The second period was more tightly contested, but the offenses created numerous chances. The Lakers generated three more corner kicks and unsuccessfully tested Hobika five more times. The Bears fired six shots on Oswego goalie Emma Allen, but couldn't add to the lead. Potsdam closed out the two-goal win.
Allen finished with eight stops. The Bears outshot the Lakers 21-16, but Oswego had an 8-2 advantage in corners.
Dean moves into fifth place on the program's scoring list with the 59th and 60th points of her career (23g, 14a) and Bowie's marker moves her into a tie for 20th place with assistant coach
Kaylen Van Wagner '17 with 27 points (12g, 3a).
The Bears head to Cortland for a showdown with the Red Dragons tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
