Bears fall to Golden Eagles in SUNYAC matchup, 2-1

POTSDAM, N.Y. --- The SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (5-6, 1-2 SUNYAC) was defeated 2-1 on Friday by the Brockport Golden Eagles (6-4, 2-1 SUNYAC). Freshman forward Kiley Longin (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay Senior) scored Brockport's two goals in the first half. Freshman midfielder Kristina Sanchez (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) scored the lone goal for the Bears on a penalty kick.

The Bears had an opportunity early as sophomore forward Lexi Dean (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) sent the ball towards the net, but freshman goalkeeper Kayla Usborne (Madison, N.Y./Madison) deflected it with both hands. Longin got the Golden Eagles on board at 37:28 after she picked up a loose ball near the penalty area, drew out Bears senior goalkeeper Delphine Léonard (Anjou, Quebec/Dawson College Prep) and fired into the left corner. At 17:10, the forward followed up with another goal. Junior defender Marissa Greiner (Kirkville, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa) launched a corner kick into the box and fellow junior defender Courtney Franz (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal), shot from the left side. Longin snuck in and tipped the ball into the middle of the net. With 7:34 left in the half, Dean was tripped just inside the box. Sanchez then cut the Brockport lead in half with a successful penalty kick.

Longin looked to secure her third goal and put the Eagles back up two goals four minutes into the half, but her shot just missed as the ball hit the crossbar. The Bears had an opportunity of their own with sophomore forward Mackenzie Bowie's (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville) header shot going just over the net at 33:45. The Golden Eagle defense then clamped down after the shot and preserved the win.

Brockport outshot Potsdam 14-10 and had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Usborne (Madison, N.Y./Madison) and Léonard each finished with five saves for their respective teams.

Next, the Bears return to action for another SUNYAC matchup as they host Geneseo tomorrow at 1 p.m.
