POTSDAM, N.Y.—On a frigid afternoon, Clarkson University (1-1) used a potent offensive effort to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (1-2) 18-5. Senior captain
Cayla O'Connor (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) led the Bears with two goals and an assist, while juniors
Alexa Ferrer (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley),
Lane Perl (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) and
Miranda Kolb (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) also scored.
After falling behind 2-0 early, O'Connor scored at 26:51 and Ferrer added a man-up goal at 25:11 to get Potsdam within 3-2. However, the Golden Knights responded with a 6-0 run over the rest of the half. Sydney Roderick, Abby Collins and Katie Sergeant each had three goals for Clarkson in the opening 30 minutes.
The Golden Knights netted the first five goals of the second half, before O'Connor set up Perl for the Bears' third marker at 17:00. Junior attack
Alli Stark (Walworth, N.Y./Gananda) assisted on Kolb's first career goal at 13:45 and O'Connor buried her second at 6:05.
Senior goalie
Katie Longamore (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) made 15 saves for the Bears and collected four ground balls. Samantha Gladd earned the win with two saves and two goals allowed in the first 37 minutes. Carolynn Peckmann stopped one shot and allowed three goals in the next 16:55. Emily Fischer closed out the contest for Clarkson with a save in the last 6:05.
Potsdam is now off until the Bears head south to face Curry College on March 13-14 in Hilton Head, S.C. Potsdam battles the Colonels at 11 a.m. on Wednesday and the Eagles at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday.
