POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Fredonia (10-14, 5-5 SUNYAC) held off a late rally in game one to defeat the SUNY Potsdam softball team (5-19, 0-8) 7-6 before running away with an 11-1 victory in game two.
After two and half scoreless innings in the opener, the Bears jumped out in front with a three-run third inning. Senior captain
Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) opened the scoring with an RBI triple to right center to score sophomore outfielder
Jen Darlak (Lockport, N.Y./Wilson). Junior captain
Lucy Condon (Kitchener, Ontario/St. David Catholic) followed with a walk and as she stole second, Falsion raced home from third to make it 2-0. Junior pitcher
Megan Fish (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) then doubled to right to plate Condon.
After Fish got out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the fourth, Fredonia finally broke through with three runs to tie the game in the top of the fifth. Sophomore second baseman Amber Piniewski (West Seneca, N.Y./Orchard Park) and senior shortstop Rhianna Paoletti (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) delivered back-to back-singles and then junior pitcher Katie Yundin (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) launched a bomb to left center to make it 3-3.
Sophomore catcher
Shelby Van Epps (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) briefly put Potsdam back in front in the bottom of the fifth, picking up an RBI on a ground out that scored Falsion. Senior third baseman Cassie Herman (Maybrook, N.Y./Valley Central) and sophomore left fielder Sydney Merkey (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) each drove in runs on sacrifice flies in the top of the sixth and the Blue Devils completed their four-run inning with two more on a Potsdam error. Fredonia held the Bears scoreless in the bottom half of the inning and led 7-4 after six.
Condon started a two-out rally with a walk in the bottom of the seventh. Van Epps moved her to third with a single and she scored on an infield hit off the bat of Fish. Freshman designated player
Abby Vaughn (Apalachin, N.Y./Owego Free Academy) then closed the gap to 7-6 with a single up the middle to score Van Epps. With the tying run aboard, Fredonia junior pitcher Sam Seegar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Star Point) entered the game to record the final out on a fly out to left.
Paoletti was 2-for-3 with a run for Fredonia. Yudin was also 2-for 3 with three RBI and sophomore catcher Eva FitzSimmons (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) was 3-for-4 with a run scored.
Falsion was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Fish was 3-for-4 with two RBI and sophomore third baseman
Sydney Miller (Hoosick Falls, N.Y./Hoosick Falls) was 2-for-4.
Yudin allowed four runs on five hits, while walking and striking out three for a no decision. Sophomore Maria Caviris (Hauppauge, N.Y./Smithtown West) (2-1) picked up the win after allowing two runs on four hits in two innings. Seegar earned the save after needing to record just the final out.
Fish received a no decision after pitching 6.2 non-consecutive innings in which she allowed three runs on 10 hits and struck out one. Senior captain
Alissa McCauley (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) (2-7) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs, one earned, on three hits in a third of an inning.
Fredonia jumped on the Bears for eight runs in the first two innings of the finale. The Blue Devils drove in three runs in the top of the first on RBI singles from freshman center fielder Maddy O'Heir (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Maryvale) and Herman and a Potsdam error. Fredonia broke the game open with five runs on five hits in the top of the second. Freshman shortstop Karli Murray (Cheektowaga, N.Y./West Seneca East) knocked in a run with a sac fly. Yudin had an RBI double and Herman an RBI single. Miller got the Bears on the board with an RBI double down the left field line that scored Fish and Potsdam trailed 8-1 after two. FitzSimmons made it 9-1 with an RBI single to left in the fourth and Fredonia tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth on passed balls.
Merkley was 2-for-4 with two runs. Yudin and O'Heir were each 1-for-2 with two runs and an RBI. FitzSimmons was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Herman was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Piniewski rounded out the leaders going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Miller was 2-for-2 with an RBI for the Bears.
Seegar (3-5) earned the win, allowing just two hits and a run, while striking out five in the five innings. Sophomore
Kiera Nesbitt (Sound Beach, N.Y./Miller Place) (1-4) allowed six earned runs on eight hits in the first 1.1 innings and freshman
Sierra Ashley (Lisbon, N.Y./Lisbon) pitched the last 3.2 innings, allowing just two earned runs and striking out two.
The Bears are now off until midweek as tomorrow's home doubleheader with Oswego State has been moved to Wednesday at 3 and 5 p.m. Tuesday's home twin bill with SUNY Canton has been postponed and will be rescheduled at a later date.
