POTSDAM, N.Y.—Oswego State (12-16, 7-5 SUNYAC) used big innings late in both games to take a doubleheader from the SUNY Potsdam softball team (5-21, 0-10) by 8-0 and 11-5 scores. Senior captain
Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) had two hits to pass Katie Marsman '16 and claim sole possession of third place on the program's all-time list.
In game one, the Lakers scored all eight of their runs in the top of the sixth. The Bears had their best chance to get out in front in the bottom of the third. Senior captain
Alissa McCauley (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Freshman second baseman
Kerrigan Rondeau (St. Regis Falls, N.Y./St. Regis Falls) pinch ran for McCauley and moved to third on an error that allowed sophomore right fielder
Jen Darlak (Lockport, N.Y./Wilson) to reach second. With runners at second and third and no outs, Oswego junior pitcher Rebecca Vilchez (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) recovered to get out of the jam. Rondeau was out on a fielder's choice at the plate. Junior left fielder
Lucy Condon (Kitchener, Ontario/St. David Catholic) grounded out to Vilchez and sophomore catcher
Shelby Van Epps (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) popped up to shortstop.
Through the first five innings, Bears junior pitcher
Megan Fish (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) allowed just one runner to reach second base, but the Lakers broke loose in the sixth. Oswego took advantage of six singles and three errors to score their runs. Just two were earned. Freshman pitcher Brianna Harrington (Gansevoort, N.Y./South Glens Falls) retired Potsdam in order in the bottom of the sixth to close out the contest.
Vilchez (5-9) allowed just one hit, one walk and struck out three in five innings for the victory. Fish allowed all eight runs, just two earned, on 10 hits over the six innings.
Lakers senior shortstop Erin Sweeney (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) was 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run. Harrington, junior left fielder Jessica Roe (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Ketcham) and senior third baseman Casey Gray (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) each had RBI singles. In her first at bat of the season, McCauley doubled down the right field line for the Bears.
The second game was a back-and-forth affair over the first four innings. Vilchez put Oswego up 1-0 with a one-out homer over to left in the top of the first. However, the Bears countered in the bottom of the inning with a two-run single from sophomore third baseman
Sydney Miller (Hoosick Falls, N.Y./Hoosick Falls) that scored Falsion and Condon.
In the bottom of the second, McCauley hit a one out triple to center and Falsion knocked her in two batters later on a line drive to center. The single was the 115th hit of her career. The Lakers chipped away at the lead over the next two innings. In the top of the third, senior designated player Emily Knowlden (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) knocked in sophomore left fielder Madelana Wrubel (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) with a single to left to make it 3-2. The next inning, Gray tied the game with an RBI single up the middle that scored senior center fielder Sarah McCullough (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central).
The Lakers took the lead for good in the fifth as senior catcher Claire Hewitt (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) doubled in McCollough and senior pitcher Angela Frampton (Corning, N.Y./Corning) to make it 5-3. Vilchez's RBI double made it 6-3 in the top of the sixth. Oswego broke the game open with five runs on five hits and two errors in the seventh. Frampton started it off with a leadoff solo shot to left field. Junior pinch hitter Joelle Nesci (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) and Wrubel followed with RBI singles and Vilchez drove in the last two runs with another single.
Down 11-3 in the bottom of the seventh, the Bears staged a mini rally. Darlak singled and Falsion walked. Condon advanced them on a ground out and Van Epps picked up an RBI on another ground out that scored Darlak. Fish drove in Falsion on a bloop single to right center to close the scoring at 11-5.
Harrington got a no-decision after allowing three runs on five hits and two strike outs over the first two innings. Frampton (3-5) earned the win, going the last five innings and allowing two runs on three hits and striking out seven.
McCauley (2-8) allowed 11 runs, nine earned, on 15 hits, while striking out three and walking one.
Vilchez was 4-for-5 for the Lakers with four RBI, a run and a home run. Frampton was 2-for-5 with an RBI, a homer and two runs scored. McCullough was 2-for-2 with three runs scored. Hewitt was 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run. Sophomore first baseman Taylor DuBois (Apalachin, N.Y./Vestal) was 1-for-3 with two runs and Wrubel was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
Falsion led the Bears, going 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored. Condon was 2-for-4 with a run and Fish was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Miller was 1-for-4 with two RBI and McCauley and Darlak were each 1-for-3 with a run.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they head to SUNY Cobleskill to face SUNY Oneonta. The doubleheader begins at 3 p.m. Potsdam's Friday doubleheader at SUNY New Paltz has been postponed and will be made up next week.
