No. 19 Saints overpower Bears

POTSDAM, N.Y.—19th-ranked St. Lawrence University (11-2) used a big first half to defeat the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (4-7) 17-3 on Tuesday night. Senior captain Gabe Carbone (Accord, N.Y./Rondout Valley) scored twice for the Bears and fellow senior captain Zach Sheridan (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) finished with 15 saves.
 
The Saints opened the scoring at 10:12 and Carbone evened the score on a pass from freshman attackman Keenan O'Gorman (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) nearly six minutes later. However, SLU rattled off 12 straight goals and led 13-1 with 13:34 to play. Carbone struck again at 10:31 and freshman attackman Cam Talcott (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) scored at 9:22 to make it 13-3. The Saints then closed the contest on a 4-0 run for the win.
 
SLU junior attackman Mike Donnelly (Mansfield, Mass./New Hampton School) led all scorers with five goals and three assists for eight points. Sophomore attackman Jack Hennessey (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) had seven points on three goals and four assists, while four other Saints registered two points each.
 
SLU junior goalie Alex Terry (Hopkinton, Mass./New Hampton School) made four saves and allowed one goal in the first 45 minutes to earn the win. Senior goalie Jordan Eichholz (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills) allowed two goals and made a save in the next 8:54 and freshman goalie William Helm (Loudonville, N.Y./Hotchkiss) was untested in the last 6:06.
 
After Sheridan saw action in the first 53:54, freshman Jack Corcoran (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) allowed two goals in the final 6:06.
 
Potsdam junior faceoff specialist Luke Vitale (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlow) won nine faceoffs and picked up four ground balls. Senior captain Colby Chapman (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) also collected four ground balls and won a faceoff.
 
The Bears are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Oneonta for a 1 p.m. battle with the Red Dragons.
