Hawks take two from Bears, Falsion moves up hits list

NEW PALTZ, N.Y.—SUNY New Paltz (21-8, 8-4 SUNYAC) swept the SUNY Potsdam softball team (5-25, 0-14) in a doubleheader on Monday afternoon. The Hawks won game one 11-3 and took game two 7-1. Senior captain Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) recorded two hits to move into a tie for second place with Dana Vollmuth '11 on the program's all-time hits list with 117. She also scored her 88th career run, just one shy of tying head coach Jordan Ott '17 for first place in that category.

In game one, New Paltz left fielder Nina Simms opened the scoring with a two-run single in the bottom of the first. Third baseman Meagan Blair followed with an RBI single to center and the Hawks led 3-0 after one.

Potsdam rallied to tie in the top of the third. Junior pitcher Megan Fish (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) knocked in Falsion with a single up the middle to get the Bears on the board. Sophomore catcher Shelby Van Epps (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) followed with a single to left that scored freshman designated player Vanessa Brandt (Saugerties, N.Y./Saugerties). Sophomore third baseman Sydney Miller (Hoosick Falls, N.Y./Hoosick Falls) made it 3-3 after another base hit to center to bring in Fish.

New Paltz put the game away with four in the fourth, three in the fifth and one in the sixth. Right fielder Ashley Puig had the big blow in the fourth, a bases loaded triple to right that made it 7-3. New Paltz increased its lead to 10-3 on an error, a sacrifice fly and an RBI double from pitcher Alyssa Pfitscher in the fifth. An infield single from center fielder Julia DiSpigna drove in the 11th and final run in the bottom of the sixth.

Falsion was 2-for-3 with a run and a walk and Brant was 1-for-3 with a run. Fish was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Van Epps and Miller were each 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Hawks pitcher Katie Quagliana was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Pfitscher finished 2-for-3 with a run and 2 RBI. Simms was also 2-for-3, but scored two and knocked in two. Puig was a perfect 3-for-3 with 3 RBI. DiSpigna was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI and first baseman Kelsey Trudden was 2-for-4 with a run.

Fish (2-9) went 5.2 innings on the mound for the Bears, allowing 11 runs, 10 earned, on 18 hits. Quagliana allowed three runs on five hits and three walks over the first 2.2. Pfitscher (3-1) picked up the win in relief after throwing 2.1 shutout innings and allowing just two hits and striking out three.

Potsdam scored first in the second game. Fish drove in sophomore right fielder Jen Darlak (Lockport, N.Y./Wilson) with a two-out single to right in the top of the first. However, the Hawks regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning. New Paltz tied the game on an error and Blair plated Simms with a sac fly to left. The Hawks added two more in the bottom of the second as Simms singled to center to score shortstop Taylor LaFrance and Quagliana. Simms closed out the scoring with a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to make it 7-1.

Fish was 2-for-3 for the Bears and junior center fielder Lucy Condon (Kitchener, Ontario/St. David Catholic) and freshman first baseman Abby Vaughn (Apalachin, N.Y./Owego Free Academy) were each 1-for-2.

Quagliana was 1-for-3 with two runs scored. LaFrance was 3-for-4 with two runs and Simms was 2-for-3 with five RBI and two runs.

Sophomore pitcher Kiera Nesbitt (Sound Beach, N.Y. / Miller Place) (1-5) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, on three hits and three walks in the first 1.2 innings. Senior captain Alissa McCauley (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) allowed three earned runs on six hits over the last 4.1 innings.
