POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam softball team (7-25) swept a doubleheader from SUNY Canton (12-18) on Tuesday afternoon. The Bears won a back-and-forth slugfest 11-7 in game one. In game two, Potsdam rolled over Canton 9-1. Senior captain
Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) was 6-for-8 with four runs scored in the two games and sophomore third baseman
Sydney Miller (Hoosick Falls, N.Y./Hoosick Falls) was 3-for-5 with seven RBI and a home run.
After a scoreless first in game one, the Kangaroos took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on an error and a sacrifice bunt. Miller tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a two-run homer to left center that knocked in junior pitcher
Megan Fish (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North).
Potsdam added two more runs in the bottom of the third and fourth. Sophomore right fielder
Jen Darlak (Lockport, N.Y./Wilson) scored on a wild pitch and junior left fielder
Lucy Condon (Kitchener, Ontario/St. David Catholic) drove in Falsion to make it 4-2 after three. In the fourth, Darlak knocked in sophomore catcher
Shelby Van Epps (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) with a sacrifice fly and Falsion singled and scored on an error to make it 6-2 after four.
Canton regained the lead in the top of the fourth, scoring five runs on six hits and three Bears errors. Senior left fielder Valerie Clark (Pendleton, N.Y./Starpoint) closed the gap to 6-4 with a two-run single. Freshman second baseman Sophia Harris (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) made it a one run game after driving in a run on a ground out. Freshman right fielder Jordan Knapp (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) followed with a single up the middle to tie the game. Senior third baseman Alicia Evans (Watertown, N.Y./Herkimer CC) then put the Roos back in front 7-6 with a double to left.
Canton's final lead didn't last long. In the bottom off the fifth, Fish hit a blast over the left field fence to tie the game. Van Epps then walked with the bases loaded to force in the eventual winning run.
The Bears then added three runs to put the game away in the bottom of the sixth. Condon doubled in freshman right fielder
Vanessa Brandt (Saugerties, N.Y./Saugerties) and Darlak. Miller then walked to bring in Condon to close the scoring at 11-7.
Clark led the Roos, going 2-for-4 with a run and 2 RBI. Knapp was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Evans was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI and freshman first baseman Selena Tasli (Shirley, N.Y./Longwood) was 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI.
Falsion was 3-for-4 with two runs for Potsdam. Condon was 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI. Fish was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Miller was 1-for-2 with a run, three RBI and two walks. Darlak finished 1-for-1 with two runs and an RBI.
Roos freshman pitcher Kayla Chevari (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) (8-9) allowed 11 runs, eight earned, on 13 hits and three walks. Fish (3-9) picked up her third win after allowing just three earned runs on seven hits and striking out two.
Game two was much tamer by comparison. The Bears scored two in the bottom of the first. Miller doubled to left center to drive in Falsion and Fish. It was déjà vu all over again in the bottom of the third as Miller hit another double to score Fish and make it 3-0.
Canton finally got on the board in the top of the fourth as Tasli knocked in senior third baseman Jaedyn Ossont (Turn, N.Y./South Lewis) with a double to left and make it 3-1. That was all for the Roos as Potsdam scored six unanswered to clinch the victory.
In the bottom of the fifth, Van Epps drove in Fish and Condon to make it 5-1. The following inning Brandt brought Falsion in on a ground out. Miller then drove in Condon with a sac fly. Fish and Van Epps scored on an errors to end the game in the sixth at 9-1.
Harris and Tasli were each 2-for-3 for Canton with Tasli claiming the only RBI. Ossont was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Falsion matched her game one numbers exactly, going 3-for-4 with two runs. Condon was 2-for-4 with two runs. Fish was 2-for-3 with four runs. Miller was 2-for-3 with four RBI and Van Epps was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Freshman pitcher Alaina Beane (Munnsville, N.Y./Stockbridge Valley) (4-8) was touched up for nine runs, six earned, on 12 hits. Bears senior captain
Alissa McCauley (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) earned the win, allowing just one run on six hits, while striking out five.
The Bears wrap up the season this weekend as they head to Brockport on Friday at 3 p.m. and Geneseo on Saturday at noon.
