Cardinals upend Bears, 13-8

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.—A late run allowed Plattsburgh State (7-7, 3-1 SUNYAC) to hold off the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (4-9, 1-4) 13-8 on Wednesday evening. Junior captain Josh Huiatt (Lisbon, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams, led the Bears with two goals and two assists and freshman attackman Cam Talcott (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) scored twice. Senior captain Zach Sheridan (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) made 11 saves.

James Sherwood and Jake Carroll got the Cardinals off to a fast start in the first 3:20, but Potsdam's defense eventually slowed them down. Huiatt made the most of a man-up situation to get the Bears on the board at 2:01 with an assist from junior attackman Tayte Murray (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse). Carroll tacked on another with 26 seconds left and Plattsburgh led 3-1 after one quarter.

Stephen Kane and Justin Wise extended the lead to 5-1 with 8:32 left in the second quarter, but the Bears and Cardinals split the final two goals of the half. Huiatt returned the favor to Murray at 5:33 and after Kane struck again, Huiatt buried his second man-up marker at 0:58 to make it a 6-3 contest. Connor Wolff scored with eight seconds remaining and the Cardinals took a 7-3 lead into the break.

Potsdam opened the third quarter on an 3-1 run to close within 8-6 over the first seven minutes. Huiatt assisted on senior attackman Sean Coe's (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) 14th goal of the season at 12:46. Wolff answered with a man-up goal at 11:09, but Talcott and fellow former Sandstoner, freshman attackman Keenan O'Gorman (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) made it a two goal game at 7:45. Senior midfielder Kyle Smith (Theresa, N.Y./Indian River) assisted on Talcott's man-up goal and freshman midfielder Alec Miller (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) notched the helper on O'Gorman's tally. Sherwood and Carroll responded in succession to make it a 10-6 contest after 45 minutes.

Smith set up Talcott for another man-up goal to open the final quarter at 10:45, but Kevin Murphy, Wolff and Kane scored the next three goals to put the game out of reach at 13-7 with 3:01 to play. Smith set up senior midfielder Josh Bradford (Whitney Point, N.Y./Limestone College) for the final goal of the game at 1:16.
