POTSDAM, N.Y. –The SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (6-10) defeated SUNY Canton (12-6, 5-1 SUNYAC) 9-2 on Wednesday night in a nonconference battle. The Bears built a 4-1 lead in the first half, and kept their foot on the pedal in the second. Junior midfielder Alexa Ferrer (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) led the Bears with a career-high tying five goals. The Bears took control early in the contest. Ferrer netted the first goal of the game nearly two minutes in. Following the goal, both defenses gave up little to nothing, until the Bears offense began to pick up. With 12:18 to go, sophomore midfielder Zoe Morgenroth (Liverpool, N.Y. / Liverpool) gave the Bears a 2-0 lead with a successful free-position shot. The Kangaroos got on the scoreboard after junior defender Cecelia Neally (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) sent a shot that was intended to be a pass into the goal from the right side of the attack area at 11:30. The Bears regained their two-goal lead after junior attacker Miranda Kolb (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) assisted senior captain Meaghan Paige (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) from behind the goal, leading to a man-up marker. Sophomore midfielder Keira Thacker's (Oakville, Ontario / T.A. Blakelock) free-position shot with two minutes left in the half gave the Bears a 4-1 advantage heading into the final 30 minutes of action.

The Bears picked up where they left off in the second half. Junior attack Alli Stark (Walworth, N.Y./Gananda) helped the Bears keep their momentum with her man-up goal on the assist from Morgenroth at 26:57. Then at 23:58, Ferrer struck again for her 25th goal of the season to put Potsdam up 6-1. Ferrer would go on to score three more goals in the final 15 minutes, completing her hat trick and sealing the 9-2 victory.
