BUFFALO, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (1-1) dominated the Bethany College Bisons (0-2) on Saturday afternoon in the D'Youville Spartan Classic, outscoring them 9-0. The contest featured the Bears' largest offensive showing since an 11-1 win over SUNY Maritime in 2008. Eight different Potsdam players scored, but junior forward
Lexi Dean (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) and freshman midfielder
Nora Canning (Saranac, N.Y./Saranac) led the way with a goal and two assists apiece. Senior goalkeeper
Delphine Léonard (Anjou, Quebec/Dawson College Prep) claimed her 15th career win, tying her for third place on the program's wins list with Bri Thibeau '17.
The first goal came just 1:49 into match after a short corner kick was crossed into the box by Dean. The attempt found sophomore midfielder
Hannah Dentel (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) on the doorstep to put it away for the Bears first goal of the season and the second of Dentel's career. The Bisons fought back to earn a corner kick of their own immediately following the Bears goal, but the header from Riley Meyers went wide.
From there, the Bears took over. They poured on five shots in the next 13 minutes with the pressure finally resulting in the second goal of the match. An own goal from a Bisons center back made it 2-0 at 16:02. At the 25:08 mark of the first half, junior midfielder
Carly Shear (Newark, N.J./Newark) scored her first career goal off a long shot through traffic. Junior midfielder
McKenzie Karpp (Marion, N.Y./Marion) added her first collegiate goal on a tip-in off a pass from Dean just over four minutes later to make it 4-0. Freshman defender
Logan McGee (St. Augustine, Fla/Allen D. Nease) scored the first of her career off a rebound at 31:32 to bring to score to 5-0. Dean notched her marker just 1:43 later with an assist from sophomore forward
Margaret Crosson (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora). Canning then netted the first of her career off a shot from inside the box with 5:43 remaining. Potsdam led by seven at the break.
In the second half, Potsdam received two more career-first goals from freshman forward
Nichaela Commisso (Rushville, N.Y./Marcus Whitman) and freshman midfielder
Kari Hance (DeKalb Junction, N.Y./Herman-Dekalb), with Canning garnering an assist on each.
Léonard needed just one save in the first 61:15 to claim a share of the shutout and freshman
Chloe Gordon (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) matched her in the last 28:45 for her college debut. Bethany goalie Corinne Grabow stopped eight shots, while playing the full contest.
Dean and McGee were selected as Potsdam's representatives on the all-tournament team.
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday, September 4, at 7:00 p.m. when they head across town to face Clarkson University.
