Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Two first half goals lift Engineers over Bears

TROY, N.Y.—Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (5-1) scored twice in three minutes during the first half to defeat the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (2-4-1) 2-0 on Saturday. Bears sophomore goalie Conor Callan (Piermont, N.Y./Tappan Zee) made six saves.

The Engineers built up pressure as the first half progressed. At 26:41, Ben Kogan struck for the eventual game-winner. Just 2:46 later, Josh Gaudiano doubled the lead. RPI outshot Potsdam 7-4 in the first half and created a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Callan made half of his saves in the first 45 minutes.

The Engineers continued to press in the second half, not allowing the Bears' offense a chance to get back into the game. Callan came up big late, stopping a penalty kick from Tommaso Valagussa at 87:30. RPI outshot the Potsdam 8-2 in the second half and earned seven more corner kicks.

Matt LaBranche made two saves for the shutout.

Next, Potsdam heads to Utica College for a 7 p.m. contest on Tuesday night.
