UTICA, N.Y.—Utica College (4-1) scored in the game's opening minutes and held on for a 2-0 win over the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (2-5-1) on Tuesday night. Sophomore goalkeeper
Conor Callan (Piermont, N.Y./Tappan Zee) made eight saves for the Bears.
Exactly two minutes into the game, Patrick Hynes struck on the first shot of the contest for the eventual game-winner. Play evened out after the goal and the Pioneers finished the half with a 7-5 advantage in shots. The score was still 1-0 at the break.
Utica turned up the pressure in the second half, but the Bears defense and Callan frustrated them until the 76th minute. Off a corner kick, Jahren James headed a ball wide, but Jhonny Theze picked up the loose ball and scored to give the Pioneers all the insurance they'd need at 75:11. Senior forward
Teddy Bruschini (Wilton, N.Y./South Glens Falls) had Potsdam's final chance 10 minutes later, but Utica goalie Randy Miksch made the save.
Miksch stopped five shots for the shutout. Utica outshot the Bears 19-10 on the evening.
Potsdam is back in action on Saturday when they host St. Lawrence University at 1 p.m.
