ALFRED, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's volleyball team (5-7) defeated Lebanon Valley College (7-6) 3-2 (23-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-27, 15-7) before falling 3-0 (19-25, 23-25, 17-25) to Grove City College (8-2) on Day 1 of the Alfred University Saxon Classic.
In the opener against the Dutchwomen, the Bears alternated the first four sets before capturing the match in set five. Freshmen
Jessica Ader (Highland Mills, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) and
Caitlin Retzlaff (Milton, Fla./Pace) led the Bears with game and career-highs in kills with 15 and 13, respectively. Ader also had a personal best 16 digs. Junior captain
Nicole Hansen (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) contributed a season-high 12 kills and career-high 20 digs. Freshman setter
Kendall Jones (Parker, Colo./Elizabeth) set personal-highs in assists (47) and digs (12) and also recorded two aces. Senior captain
Natalie Magallon (Commerce, Calif./Bell Gardens) registered 37 digs, five assists and two aces.
Ader paced the Bears with seven more kills and five digs against the Wolverines. Hansen totaled six kills and 12 digs. Jones finished her night with 22 assists and Magallon added 12 digs and two aces.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. when they face the host Saxons. They close the weekend with a 1 p.m. match against Hilbert College.
