Bears fall at Fredonia in OT, 2-1

FREDONIA, N.Y.—SUNY Fredonia (4-4-1, 1-0-1 SUNYAC) scored 15 seconds into overtime to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (5-5, 1-1) 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. Melanie Minotti scored both goals for the Blue Devils and sophomore midfielder Kristina Sanchez (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) scored for the Bears.

Potsdam outplayed the Blue Devils in the first half and it showed in an 8-2 advantage in shots. The Bears put seven shots on Fredonia goalie Sabrina Suriani, but she kept Potsdam off the board in the first half. The Blue Devils made the most of their best scoring opportunity of the opening 45 minutes. At 7:15, Bears senior goalkeeper Delphine Léonard (Anjou, Quebec/Dawson College Prep) stopped Sophia Alesi's high shot, but seconds later Melanie Minotti struck to make it 1-0. Potsdam continued to trail at the break.

The second half was evenly played early, with shots hard to come by. However, the Bears finally got even at 61:23 as Sanchez was awarded and capitalized on a penalty kick. Potsdam outshot Fredonia 12-6 in the second half, but couldn't pull ahead.

Léonard made a final save nine seconds into overtime, but Minotti was awarded a penalty kick six seconds later and put the game away.

Léonard finished with seven saves, while Suriani stopped 12 shots for the win. The Bears finished with a 20-10 advantage in shots and an 8-0 edge in corner kicks.
