OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.—The SUNY College at Old Westbury (1-2) scored in the 21st minute and made it stand up in a 1-0 victory over the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (2-1-1) on Friday afternoon.
The contest was a defensive battle from the outset and the Panthers totaled the only three shots of the first half. At the 20:35 mark, Grixon Moreira struck for the contest's lone goal. The Bears and Panthers each created two corner kicks in the first half.
Potsdam was able to turn up the pressure in the second half. The Bears took five shots and generated four corner kicks. Sophomore defender
Colin Zieske (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) had one of Potsdam's best chances of the day just 4:50 into the second half, but Panthers goalie James Perciballi came up with the stop. With just 51 seconds remaining, freshman forward
Andrew Spagnuolo (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) had a chance to tie the score, but the ball sailed wide.
Bears sophomore goalie
Conor Callan (Piermont, N.Y./Tappan Zee) and Periciballi each made one save in the contest. Old Westbury outshot the Bears 6-5, but Potsdam had six corners to the Panthers' four.
The Bears are back in action on Sunday at 11 a.m. when they square off with No. 16 Penn State-Behrend at West Point Prep.
