POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (2-2) shook off a slow start to defeat the Maine-Fort Kent (1-3) 3-0 in its home opener on Friday night. Senior and junior captains
Monica Mack (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) and
Nicole Hansen (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) each recorded a game-high 10 kills.
The Bears were down big early in set one, but stormed back for a 25-18 win. They pulled away from the Bengals late in set two for a 25-20 victory and rolled past them 25-15 in set three.
In addition to their kills, Mack added a block and Hansen had an ace and four digs. Freshman setter
Kendall Jones (Parker, Colo./Elizabeth) recorded a career-high 30 assists, four aces and a block. Senior captain
Natalie Magallon (Commerce, Calif./Bell Gardens) registered a game-high 21 digs and six assists, while freshman outside hitter
Jessica Ader (Highland Mills, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) totaled six and senior defensive specialist
Dahlia Rafael-Tirado (Warwick, R.I./Classical) finished with two aces and three assists.
Maine-Fort Kent junior outside hitter Luse Lumas (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/Taft College) matched the Bears with a contest-best 10 kills along with seven digs and two aces. Freshman middle hitter Ashley Sauri (Deltona, Fla./Trinity Christian) contributed five kills and freshman outside hitter Erika Gutierrez (Lindsay, Calif./Harmony Magnet) had four kills, 20 assists, 10 digs and two aces. Junior libero Kaylee Neher (Taft, Calif./Taft College) picked up 10 digs.
The two teams go at it again tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.
