Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Bears shake off rough start to complete weekend sweep with 68-58 win over Geneseo

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (8-3, 3-1 SUNYAC) trailed SUNY Geneseo (4-7, 1-3) by 14 points nearly midway through the half before charging back to earn the 68-58 win on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore forward Isaiah Brown (Westside Queens, N.Y./NIA Prep) had a game-high 21 points along with nine rebounds and senior captain Aaron Armstrong (Lisbon, N.Y./Madrid-Waddington) scored a career-high 12 points and grabbed five boards.

Potsdam's offense was cold out the gate and the Knights were flying fresh off a win over Plattsburgh. Geneseo sophomore guard Elijah Wingfield (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) scored 12 of his team's first 19 points as the Knights built a 19-5 lead at the 12:32 mark. With things looking bleak, Bears junior forward Dante Viskovich (Massena, N.Y./Massena) provided a jolt from the bench as he has so many times before. He hit a three to start a 22-9 run over the rest of the half. Brown scored seven points during the stretch and Viskovich drilled two more threes, including one with 38 seconds left to get Potsdam within 28-27 at the half.

Armstrong gave Potsdam its first lead 15 seconds into the second half with another three. Knights sophomore forward Michael Gannon (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) countered with a three to make it 31-30 at 19:25. Just 15 seconds later, Brown scored on a layup and and Potsdam never trailed again. A 17-4 run capped by a Brown three put the Bears up 47-36 with 11:52 to play. With 7:02 remaining senior captain Danny Delsol-Lowry (Queens, N.Y./Queens High School of Teaching) sank a three to give Potsdam its biggest advantage of the contest at 55-40. Several times as the clock wound down, the Knights whittled the deficit to nine, but the Bears always had an answer and Geneseo never got any closer.

Viskovich had nine points and sophomore guard Isaiah Joseph (Harlem, N.Y./Izquierdo Health and Science) chipped in eight.

Wingfield finished with 18 points before fouling out. Gannon scored 14 and junior forward Alex Merhige (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) added eight.

Potsdam outshot Geneseo 43.6-percent to 34.8 and edged the Knights on the glass by a 42-40 count.

The Bears host North Country and SUNYAC rival Plattsburgh State at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday night.
