Bears men’s volleyball splits to open NEAC play

LANCASTER, PA. – The SUNY Potsdam men's volleyball team (2-4, 1-1 NEAC) opened NEAC play against Wilson College (1-2, 1-2 NEAC) and Lancaster Bible College (10-2, 2-0 NEAC) in Lancaster, Pa. on Saturday afternoon. The Bears won their first match in straight sets (25-16, 25-21, 25-20) for the first conference win in program history. The Bears dropped their second match of the day, losing 3-0 (25-6, 25-13, 25-11).

In the Bears first match of the day, freshman outside hitter Zaire Rogers (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Cheektowaga) led the Bears with 12 kills, one block, one assist, and 13 digs. Junior outside hitter Ernest Sosa (Bronx, N.Y./Bronx Leadership Academy) contributed 5 kills and 1 block. Middle/opposite hitter Brendan Wall (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) had a strong game with four kills, three aces and 11 digs. Senior outside hitter Saluhu Malam (Bronx, N.Y./Harry S. Truman) tallied four aces and one block. Sophomore setter Alec Roy (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) had a strong showing as he recorded 20 assists and two aces. Libero Kevin Sanchez (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) chipped in two assists and 11 digs for the Bears.
 
The Phoenix were led by Ian Firestone who had eight kills, one ace, one block, nine assists and 10 digs. Oliver Perry recorded 5 kills, 9 assists, and 5 digs.
 
In the later match, Rogers once again led the Bears as he tallied six kills, four assists, one ace, one block, and three digs. Freshman libero Kiernan Morgan (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream North) had two assists and three digs, while Malam contributed an ace and a block. Sosa recorded two kills and two assists for the Bears. Wall chipped in three blocks for Potsdam.
 
Reuben Kemrer led the way for the Chargers, recording 28 assists, six digs, one block and one ace. Nate Miller had nine kills and one block, while Noah Miller had five kills and three aces. Kyran Flahive tallied seven kills and three digs for the Chargers.
 
The Bears are back on the court on February 14, as they take on Daemen College and Penn State Altoona.
