GENESEO—SUNY Geneseo (6-5-2, 3-3 SUNYAC) scored a goal in each half to defeat the SUNY Potsdam men's soccer team (2-10-2, 0-7) 2-0 on Friday afternoon.
Tight defense was the story in the first half as the teams combined for just five shots. Geneseo finished the opening 45 minutes with a 3-2 edge in shots and a 1-0 lead. At 13:58, Justin Arilotta netted the eventual game-winner.
The Knights turned up the pressure in the second half, but the Bears' defense managed to defuse most of their chances. With about 25 minutes remaining, sophomore midfielder
Rafael Castro (Cartagena, Colombia/Longwood) picked up a loose ball outside the box and launched at Geneseo goalie Will Price. Price snatched the ball out of the air and denied the game-tying marker. The Knights cemented their victory at 82:02 with a goal from Ryan Hilke to close out the scoring.
Bears senior goalie Connor Callan (Piermont, N.Y./Tappan Zee) and Price each made a save in the contest.
Potsdam is back in action tomorrow afternoon when the Bears head to Brockport for a 1 p.m. contest.
