Red Dragons down Bears, 5-1

CORTLAND, N.Y.—SUNY Cortland (5-1, 1-0 NEWHL) scored three times in the second period en route to a 5-1 win over the SUNY Potsdam women's hockey team (1-3-1, 0-2-1) on Friday night. Sophomore goalie Ellie Zurfluh (Aravada, Colo./Team Colorado) made 37 saves and junior forward Kaylee Merrill (Wasilla, Alaska/Anchorage North Stars) scored for the Bears.

The defense was tight and goaltending sharp throughout the scoreless first period. Scoring chances were hard to come by. The Red Dragons edged Potsdam in shots 11-7. Cortland was unable to capitalize on the first power play of the contest. Zurfluh and Red Dragons goalie Anna Hamid kept their opponents off the board through the opening 20 minutes.

Cortland scored three times in the second period. Grace Schnorr opened the scoring at 4:47. Meggan Cramer struck at 10:01. Schnorr buried her second at 17:17. The Red Dragons dominated the play throughout middle stanza, outshooting Potsdam 21-5. Despite 18 more saves from Zurfluh, the Bears trailed by three after 40 minutes.

Cortland got its fourth just 3:13 into the third period as Mia Hlasnick struck. Hlasnick tacked on her second at 17:05 and Cortland led 5-0. With just six seconds left Merrill scored for Potsdam to break up the shutout. Junior defenseman Taylor Swamp (Akwesasne, N.Y./St. Lawrence Steel) and freshman defenseman Sara Barrett (Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) each assisted on the goal.

Hamid finished with 17 saves to earn the win for the Red Dragons. Cortland was 0-for-2 on the power play and the Bears were 0-for-1.

Potsdam is back in action tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. when the Bears head to Oswego State.
