Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Roos take Route 11 Rivalry round one, 3-1

CANTON, N.Y.—SUNY Canton (3-3-1) scored twice in the third period to defeat the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (1-10) 3-1 on Friday evening. Freshman goalie Nico Gamarra (Milton, Vt./Islander Hockey Club) made 28 saves in his first collegiate start and freshman forward Josh Bifolchi (Ottawa, Ontario/Mississauga Chargers) scored for the Bears.

The teams battled through a scoreless first period. The Kangaroos had the only power play of the 20 minutes, but were unable to capitalize. Potsdam outshot Canton 10-7 in the stanza.

The Roos drew first blood at 6:57 of the second period. Carson Lanceleve gave his team a 1-0 lead. Canton was on the power play twice in the second, but was unable to add to its advantage. However, their 10-4 upper hand in shots kept the Bears on the defensive.

The teams combined for three goals in the third period. The Roos added another goal at 11:58, as Colton Sipperley made it 2-0. Bifolchi got the Bears on the board at 18:29 with a power-play marker and Gamarra pulled for an extra attacker. Freshman defenseman Drew Rose (Brasher Falls, N.Y./Utica Jr. Comets) and senior forward Robert Clerc (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Oswego State) each assisted on the play. Down one, Potsdam pulled Gamarra again with 1:21 remaining. With one second on the clock, Brett Bannister scored to seal the Canton 3-1 victory.

Pierce Diamond made 18 saves for the win. Potsdam was 1-for-4 on the power play and the Roos were 0-for-5.

The Bears will try to get even tomorrow night at 7 p.m. when Canton comes to Maxcy Ice Arena.
