Canton upends Bears, 4-1

POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Canton (5-6-1) broke a 1-1 tie in the second period and went on to a 4-1 win over the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (1-11) on Tuesday night. Senior defenseman Justin Geary (Clifton Park, N.Y./Wilkes University) scored for the Bears and senior goalie Michael Paglucca (North Reading, Mass./New Hampshire Avalanche) made 27 saves.

The Kangaroos scored just 55 seconds into the contest. Senior forward Jesse Farabee (Cicero, N.Y./Oswego State) wristed a shot from the right faceoff circle into the top left corner of the net for a 1-0 lead. Potsdam killed off two Canton power plays in the period and then got even at 16:01. Geary intercepted the puck in the Bears zone and fed freshman forward Garrett McArthur (London, Ontario/Markham Royals) to break out. McArthur then returned the favor to Geary in front of the net and he beat Canton junior goalie Pierce Diamond (Edmonton, Alberta/Albertus Magnus) to make it 1-1.

The Kangaroos scored the eventual game-winner at 8:32 of the second period. Senior forward Jake Mayette (Madrid, N.Y./Syracuse Stars) fired from the left faceoff circle. Paglucca slowed, but didn't stop the shot as it snuck in for a 2-1 lead. Canton junior forward Sam Martin (Canton, N.Y./Charlotte Rush) added a power-play goal at 18:02 and the Roos led 3-1 after 40 minutes.

The Bears looked to create some pressure with three power-play opportunities in the third period, but were unable to break through. At 8:20, Roos freshman forward Brendan Morrow (Wetaskwin, Alberta/Lloydminster Bobcats) stole the puck away shorthanded and deposited into the back of the net to close the scoring.

Diamond finished with 21 saves for the win. Canton was 1-for-5 on the man advantage and Potsdam was 0-for-5. The Roos had a 31-22 edge in shots.

The teams face each other again tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in Maxcy Hall.
