Roos rough up Bears

POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Canton (6-6-1) scored three goals in the second and third periods to pull away for a 7-2 win over the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (1-12) on Wednesday night. Bears freshmen forward Andrew Lantry (Massena, N.Y./New England Wolves) and Josh Bifolchi (Ottawa, Ontario/Mississauga Chargers) each scored their first collegiate goal.

Kangaroos senior forward Jesse Farabee (Cicero, N.Y./Oswego State) opened the scoring at 14:17 of the first period with a shot from the slot. Just over three minutes later, Lantry deflected a shot from freshman defenseman Tyler Lisieski (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Vermont Lumberjacks) over Canton sophomore goalie Filip Schlyter (Saltsjobaden, Sweden/Seahawks Hockey Club) to tie the score. Senior defenseman Justin Geary (Clifton Park, N.Y./Wilkes University) picked up the second assist.

The score remained the same until the final five minutes of the second period when the Roos broke out. At 16:49, freshman forward Zac Sirota (Vaughan Ontario/Grande Prairie Storm) struck to make it 2-1. Less than a minute later, Potsdam was called for a faceoff violation. Seven seconds into the power play, freshman forward Filip Jakobsson (Stockholm, Sweden/Maryland Black Bears) scored on a low shot from the left faceoff circle. Canton added another marker at 19:06 when junior forward Matthew Headland (Bottesford, Great Britain/Corpus Christi IceRays) buried a Potsdam turnover. The Roos led 4-1 after two periods.

Canton junior forward Brett Bannister (Innisfil, Ontario/Toronto Patriots) extended the lead to four 2:06 into the final period. Freshman forward Brendan Morrow (Wetaskiwin, Alberta/Lloydminster Bobcats) netted the Roos' second power-play goal at 10:02. Just over six minutes later, junior forward Brendan McCormack (Nutley, N.J/Charlotte Rush) scored Canton's final goal to make it 7-1. With three seconds remaining in the contest, Bifolchi scored in a crowd in front of the net. Senior assistant captain Chris Gratton (Pottstown, Pa./Walpole Express) and Geary each assisted on the goal.

In his college debut, freshman goalie John Werber (Skillman, N.J./Team Maryland) made 39 saves. Schlyter finished with 17 for the win. Canton was 2-for-3 on the man advantage and Potsdam was 0-for-2.

The Bears are back in action on Friday, January 21, when they head to Oswego State to resume SUNYAC play.
