Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Power play paces Morrisville past Potsdam, 4-1

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Morrisville State (4-7-1, 1-6 SUNYAC) scored two power-play goals and an empty-netter to down the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (1-9, 0-8) 4-1 on Wednesday night. Senior assistant captain Thomas Terranova (Middletown, N.J./Syracuse Stars) scored for the Bears.

Potsdam was called for an interference penalty at 6:05 of the first period and the Mustangs made the most of the opportunity. Bears senior goalie Michael Paglucca (North Reading, Mass./New Hampshire Avalanche) stopped an initial shot, but the rebound kicked out to the right side of the net. Freshman forward Jake Kaplan (Bowie, Md./Hampton Roads Whalers) was there to knock the puck into the empty net at 6:42. Potsdam outshot Morrisville 11-4 in the opening period, but trailed 1-0 after one period.

The second period was evenly played and the Bears killed off a penalty early. At 18:26, senior forward Michael McArthur's (St. Thomas, Ontario/Oswego State) aggressive play forced a turnover in the corner. He fed the puck to senior forward Robert Clerc (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Oswego State) who then found Terranova in the high slot. Terranova ripped a shot past Mustang sophomore goalie Owen Liskiewicz (Redbank, N.J./Oklahoma City Jr. Blazers) to tie the game. The momentum was short lived. The Bears were called for delay of game on the ensuing faceoff and Morrisville capitalized. At 19:13, freshman forward Chris Mott (Nesconset, N.Y./Hampton Roads Whalers) knocked home a loose puck for the eventual game-winner. Potsdam trailed 2-1 after 40 minutes.

Mott struck again just 48 seconds into the third period to give the Mustangs all the insurance they needed. The Bears controlled the play territorially for much of the rest of the period, but couldn't solve Liskiewicz again. Potsdam called timeout with 2:17 left and pulled Paglucca for an extra attacker. After the timeout Liskiewicz stymied Bears senior forward Brett Horn (Cary, N.C./Humboldt Broncos) and Morrisville cleared the zone. With 51 seconds to go, Mustangs junior captain Ben Sprague (Norfolk, N.Y./Syracuse Jr. Stars) fired from just outside the Morrisville zone and the puck went the length of the ice into the net to close the scoring at 4-1.

Paglucca finished with 12 saves, while Liskiewicz made 38 for the win. Potsdam was 0-for-4 on the man advantage and the Mustangs went 2-for-3.

The Bears wrap up the semester with a home-and-home series with SUNY Canton this weekend. They travel to Canton on Friday at 7 p.m. and then host the Roos at the same time on Saturday.
