Mustangs escape Bears in 2021 season opener, 11-10

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Morrisville State scored 1:27 into overtime to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (0-1) 11-10 in the Bears' 2021 season opener. Sophomore attack Hannah Stevenson (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) led Potsdam with a goal and five assists. Senior midfielder Keira Thacker (Oakville, Ontario/T.A. Blakelock) had three goals and an assist, sophomore attack Anita Reitano (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) scored three goals, senior attack Alli Stark (Walworth, N.Y./Ganada) had two and sophomore attack Julia Blair (Massena, N.Y./Massena) netted the first of her career. Mustang freshman attack Maddie Baum (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) led all scorers with six goals and three assists.

Morrisville junior midfielder Makenzi Santini (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) opened the scoring on a free position at 28:15. Thacker quickly erased the lead with two straight at 25:30 and 23:00 and Stark capped the 3-0 run on a helper from Stevenson at 21:56. After Baum closed the gap to 3-2 just over two minutes later, Potsdam went on another 3-0 stretch. Stevenson set up Reitano at 18:19. Stark struck at 16:17 and Stevenson assisted on Thacker's third at 11:34 to give the Bears their biggest advantage of the game at 6-2. Morrisville fought its way off the ropes with a 3-0 run of its own in a 2:33 span, with two markers from Baum and one from sophomore midfielder Aria Treadway (Rome, N.Y./Rome Free Academy). Thacker assisted on Reitano's second goal at 3:13 and Baum sent the Mustangs into the half down just 7-6 with her fourth at the 0:26 mark.

The defenses were stingier in the second half, but Reitano netted her third at 22:03 to make it a two-goal contest. Morrisville scored the next three to take its second lead with 4:55 to play. Freshman midfielder Jaele Naab (Buffalo, N.Y./Clarence), Baum and Santini struck in succession to make it 9-8. With 2:55 left, Blair cut in front of the net and buried a pass from Stevenson to knot the score at nine. Baum answered just 15 seconds later with her sixth of the game, but a strong individual effort from Stevenson with 1:44 on the clock sent the game into overtime tied 10-10.

The Mustangs claimed the draw control to open the extra session and never relinquished possession. At 4:33, Baum fed Treadway from behind the goal and she delivered for Morrisville.

Santini and Treadway each finished with two goals for the Mustangs.

Junior midfielder Calena Rodriguez (Albany, N.Y./Albany) finished with six ground balls, four draw controls and four caused turnovers for the Bears. Freshman midfielder Novaleigh LeGrow (Massena, N.Y./Massena) contributed a game-high five draw controls, three ground balls and four caused turnovers for Potsdam in her collegiate debut.

The Bears open SUNYAC play at Oneonta on Saturday at 1 p.m.
