Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Stark lifts Bears to season’s first win in OT

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Senior attack Alli Stark (Walworth, N.Y./Gananda) matched a career-high with four goals, striking 1:24 into overtime to lift the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (1-2) to an 11-10 victory over SUNY Canton (0-2) on Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore attack Hannah Stevenson (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) had a game-high five points on three goals and two assists. Senior midfielder Keira Thacker (Oakville, Ontario/T.A. Blakeville) scored twice and sophomore attack Anita Reitano (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) added two assists.

The Bears scored three of the first four goals and led 3-1 at 20:52 on two markers from Stark and one from Stevenson. Junior attack EllaRose LeMay (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) scored the Kangaroos' first two goals and senior attack Erin Parks (Watertown, N.Y./General Brown) tied the game at 16:22. Potsdam answered with the last four goals of the half. Freshman midfielder Novaleigh LeGrow (Massena, N.Y./Massena), Stevenson, Thacker and junior attack Macy Reid (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) scored in succession with Stevenson assisting on the last two. The Bears carried the 7-3 advantage into the break.

LeMay and freshman midfielder Lindsey Wunder (Walworth, N.Y./Gananda) struck first in the second half and narrowed Canton's deficit to 7-5 at 25:50. Thacker answered 38 seconds later and junior midfielder Calena Rodriguez (Albany, N.Y./Albany) set up Stark's third goal at 24:40 to make it 9-5 Potsdam. The Kangaroos countered with four straight to tie the score at 10:13. Parks had the first two followed by one from junior attack Stephanie Thayer (West Henrietta, N.Y.Rush Henrietta) and another from Wunder. Stevenson put the Bears up on a great individual effort at 6:57 and sophomore goalie Netta Terrance (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) robbed Thayer with 1:59 left. In the final minute, Canton cleared the ball and sophomore attack Casey Pelton (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) one-timed a pass from Parks home to tie the score at 10-10 with just six seconds left.

The Kangaroos grabbed the opening draw control in overtime, but turned the ball over. Canton junior goalie Madison Leary (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) made two big saves, but the third shot was the charm for the Bears. After Leary stymied Thacker and Stark on back-to-back attempts, Stark picked up the loose ball and ripped it home at 4:36 for the win.

Terrance finished with four saves, while Leary stopped 10 shots. LeMay finished with four goals for the Roos and Parks had three goals and an assist.

Rodriguez had a big day with five ground balls, five draw controls and four caused turnovers. Junior attack Kerry Mayette (Madrid, N.Y./Madrid-Waddington) totaled four ground balls and three caused turnovers and LeGrow contributed seven ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers.

The Bears return to SUNYAC play on Saturday when they host No. 22 SUNY Cortland at 1 p.m.
