Big second half powers Potsdam past Cazenovia

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Nine second half goals broke open a tight game and lifted the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (2-3) to a 14-6 victory over Cazenovia College (1-1) on Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore attack Anita Reitano (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) had a big day with three goals and two assists. Fellow sophomore attack Hannah Stevenson (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) had two goals and an assist and freshman midfielder Lindsey LaDue (Massena, N.Y./Massena), senior midfielder Keira Thacker (Oakville, Ontario/T.A. Blakelock) and freshman attack Julia Blair (Massena, N.Y./Massena) each scored twice. Sophomore goalie Netta Terrance (Akwesasne, N.Y.//Salmon River) made six saves for her third career win.
 
The Bears scored three times in the first 8:17 as Thacker, LaDue and Stevenson gave Potsdam a 3-0 advantage. The Wildcats closed to within one on markers from freshman attack Madison Sciera (Homer, N.Y./Homer) and junior midfielder Callie Andolina (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) at 20:29 and 14:17, respectively. Reitano answered with an assist on Blair's first marker at 12:52 and then scored her first of the game 58 seconds later to put Potsdam up 5-3. Andolina countered at 7:50 and junior midfielder Angela Nuzzo (Syracuse, N.Y./Liverpool) struck at 4:40 for the last two markers of the half.
 
At 24:44 of the second half, junior midfielder Sydney Allan (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) tied the game for the final time. The score remained even for the next 8:55, when the Bears took control with a 6-0 run. Thacker gave Potsdam the lead for good at 15:49. Graduate student attack Alli Stark (Walworth, N.Y./Gananda) made it 7-5 59 seconds later and Stevenson notched her second at 11:31. Reitano scored her second at 10:34 followed by Blair's second on a helper from Stevenson at 9:16. Freshman midfielder Novaleigh LeGrow (Massena, N.Y./Massena) capped the run with her lone goal at 8:19. Andolina briefly slowed Potsdam's momentum with her third goal at 7:27, but the Bears tacked on three more to close out the 14-6 win. Reitano (5:20), junior attack Macy Reid (Massena, N.Y./Massena) (2:26) and LaDue (0:27) scored the final goals for the contest. Reitano picked up her second assist on LaDue's last tally.
 
The Bears outshot the Wildcats 38-18 and finished with advantages in ground balls (27-19) and draw controls (13-9). Thacker collected six ground balls, two draw controls and caused four turnovers. Junior midfielder Calena Rodriguez (Albany, N.Y./Albany) had three draw controls and three caused turnovers and LeGrow contributed five ground balls, three draw controls and a caused turnover.
 
Cazenovia senior goalie Amanda Drazek (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) made 14 saves in the contest.
 
The meeting between the two teams was the first since 2011. Potsdam is 10-0 against Wildcats in the all-time series dating back to 2003.
 
The Bears are back in action on Saturday, when they host SUNY New Paltz in a critical SUNYAC contest at 1 p.m.
