Bears smother Elmira in the heat, 10-2

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (3-5) shut down Elmira College (3-2) 10-2 in the nearly 80 degree heat. Sophomore attack Hannah Stevenson (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams), graduate attack Alli Stark (Walworth, N.Y./Gananda) and sophomore attack Anita Reitano (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) each scored two goals and had an assist. Senior midfielder Keira Thacker (Oakville, Ontario/T.A. Blakelock) added two goals and junior attack Macy Reid (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) and freshman midfielder Lindsey LaDue (Massena, N.Y./Massena) each had one.
 
Offense was slow to come by early in the contest. Reitano opened the scoring at 23:30 and Thacker doubled the lead 9:58 later with a helper from Stevenson. Freshman attack Emily Ferguson (Waterloo, N.Y./Waterloo) got the Soaring Eagles on the board at 9:01. The Bears netted the final four goals in the half. Stark set up LaDue's tally at 8:10 and Reitano assisted on Reid's goal at 5:06. Thacker struck at 4:02 and sophomore attack Julia Blair (Massena, N.Y./Massena) assisted on Stark's goal at 3:21. Potsdam led 6-1 at the break.
 
Stevenson and Reitano extended the lead to 8-1 with the first two goals of the second half at 24:16 and 22:21. Ferguson got one back for Elmira on a free position at 18:44, but the Bears netted the final two markers. Stevenson got her second at 14:11 and Stark scored at 6:10 with a helper from junior midfielder Calena Rodriguez (Albany, N.Y./Albany).
 
Sophomore goalie Netta Terrance (Akwesasne, N.Y./Salmon River) needed just a save for her fourth career win. Soaring Eagles sophomore goalie Alex Cox (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan) allowed six goals and made seven saves in the first half. Senior goalie Krystyna Lilland (Saugerties, N.Y./Saugerties) allowed four goals and made five saves in the final 30 minutes.
 
Stevenson collected five ground balls, a draw control and caused three turnovers. LaDue had five ground balls and four caused turnovers. Rodriguez finished with three ground balls, two caused turnovers and two draw controls. Thacker had two caused turnovers and three draw controls.
 
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday, when they head to Cortland to wrap up the season series with the No. 18 Red Dragons at 4 p.m.
